Miami-Dade County press release, 10/29/19  (dated):

South Florida transit leaders take part in Super Bowl LIV Surface Transportation Security Tabletop Exercise

MIAMI ( October 29, 2019 )

The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), Brightline (soon to be Virgin Trains) and other transportation security stakeholders participated today in a Super Bowl LIV Surface Transportation Security Tabletop Exercise led by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The communications drill, which was closed to the media, took place at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center at 111 NW First St. in Miami.

In preparation for Super Bowl LIV, the exercise addressed collaboration among regional mass transit and passenger rail operators and their respective security capabilities, resources and plans. The South Florida transportation entities also discussed coordination and communication processes in case of a significant security incident in the Miami area.

“Transportation in South Florida has evolved significantly since the last time Miami hosted the Super Bowl in 2010,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “It’s now easy for people to connect by transit between downtown Super Bowl LIV festivities and the NFL Super Bowl Experience in Miami Beach. This enhanced communication and collaboration across all mobility options is critical in safely and efficiently moving thousands of visitors throughout our County.”

Focused on three main objectives, the exercise evaluated intelligence and information sharing within and among DTPW, SFRTA, Brightline and the Department of Homeland Security, including the Transportation Security Administration. It reviewed the ability of first responders to coordinate and communicate across all entities following a significant security incident impacting mass transit and passenger rail.

The drill also assessed how the transportation and security partners select, resource, share and implement risk-based physical protective measures in response to a security threat.

The Super Bowl LIV Surface Transportation Security Tabletop Exercise is a project of TSA’s Intermodal Security Training and Exercise Program (I-STEP). By enhancing security capabilities, the drill enables participants to build partnerships with regional transportation stakeholders.
