Large Sinkhole On Fourth Street, Caused By Central Subway Construction, May Take Weeks To Fix

A pretty significant sinkhole that appeared at Fourth and Jessie Streets over the weekend, which the SFMTA is euphemistically referring to as a "void in the street," may take two weeks or more to fix, and definitely freaked out the employees and owner of Cole Hardware, which sits right next to the "void."

As Cole Hardware owner Paul Shindler told KTVU, "It wasn't so bad, until they sent an officer in here telling us to shut our front door. So that was nerve-wracking!"

KTVU-TV (FOX), San Francisco, CA 12/30/14:

Crews work to repair SOMA sinkhole

SAN FRANCISCO - It could take up to two weeks to repair a sinkhole in San Francisco's South of Market district.

The hole at 4th and Jessie Streets started to give way over the weekend.

"In this case we did an inspection and noticed that there was some give in the surface and immediately called in repairs to ensure that no one was hurt, there was no structural damage to any of the buildings nearby," said Paul Rose, spokesman for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Rose said the SFMTA will inspect the 1.7 mile alignment of the Central Subway route, from North Beach to 4th and Harrison, to find out what happened. "This is an unexpected situation," Rose explained. "We're going to continue to monitor the alignment as we continue to do the work to make sure this doesn't happen again."

I have one word for you:    California.  This is reminiscent of when Hollywood Boulevard collapsed while they were building the LACMTA  Red Line subway beneath it.

SFMTA news release, 5/18:

The Central Subway Tunnel Portal Entrance Is Now Complete
With the completion of this structure the subway project remains on-time and on-budget

San Francisco— The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages all transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), announces the completion of the Central Subway tunnel portal entrance, which was the final element to the overall tunneling contract. This portion of the Central Subway Project was completed on-time and on-budget.

“The Central Subway will help connect our dynamic neighborhoods and our growing city,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “This is a major milestone for the Central Subway project that will help us deliver on our promise of a world class, 21st century transportation system for San Francisco that is safe, reliable and affordable. It will serve residents and visitors alike, especially in our growing neighborhoods of Mission Bay, SOMA, Visitacion Valley and others.”

The portal, at 4th and Harrison streets, was initially called the “launch box” because it served as the entrance site of two 350-foot-long boring machines (TBMs). Each TBM tunneled 8,500 feet beneath SoMa, Union Square and Chinatown creating the Central Subway tunnels. The identical twin TBMs weighed-in at 750 tons each and were affectionately named Mom Chung – for Dr. Margaret “Mom” Chung, the nation’s first Chinese-American physician – and Big Alma – for San Francisco philanthropist and socialist “Big Alma” de Bretteville Spreckles. Now that the TBMs have completed their 1.5-mile journeys, the launch box has been seismically and structurally reinforced creating the portal where the Muni Metro T Third Line Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) will enter and exit the Central Subway.

The tunnel portal structure contract called for a final completion date of May 15, 2015. However, the crews met expectations by substantially completing the portal structure, constructing the twin tunnels and five cross passages a month earlier.

“It was not only imperative that the portal structure create San Francisco’s next generation of public transit,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA Director of Transportation. “It was crucial that we adhered to our commitment to the public. We promised to deliver on-time and on-budget, and the completion of this portion of the project is another milestone that demonstrates we deliver as promised.”

The project was complete within budget estimates of $241 million. The federal Department of Transportation announced approval of the Full Funding Grant Agreement of $942.2 million to fund nearly half of the Central Subway Project. The remaining budget is balanced by existing state and local grant funds.

The Central Subway is expected to open to the public in 2019 and will directly serve some of San Francisco’s most densely populated communities including: the Visitacion Valley in the Southeast, east to the Bayview/Dogpatch, and west to the city’s center. For months the barriers near Union Square have been the only visible sign to San Franciscans that work on the Central Subway was underway.

Op-Ed

Central Subway problems persist

Have you ever wondered how the Central Subway project, a 1.7-mile rail extension of Muni’s Third Street line from Fourth and King to Chinatown, managed to get so bollixed up? Here’s a brief history of what happened:

At the end of 2017, it was announced the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Central Subway manager, John Funghi, was leaving his post for the $1.6 billion project to work on Caltrain electrification. His departure came shortly after Tutor-Perini, the station contractor, released a report Nov. 1, 2017, showing that the project is more than two years behind schedule and burdened with more than 1,300 construction contractor claims outstanding — only 73 of which had at that time been addressed by the SFMTA — leaving the remaining 94 percent awaiting “processing.”

As things stand, the trains won’t be rolling into Chinatown before Spring 2021, at least 29 months behind schedule.

The true extent of the project’s construction cost and delay problems are now revealed:  .  .  .

Gerald Cauthen represents SaveMuni, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization created to help find ways of improving Muni and the other transit services leading into and serving San Francisco.

San Francisco, CA Chronicle, 5/10/18:

SF subway stalled after contractor lays down wrong track, city says

The opening of Muni’s Central Subway from Caltrain to Chinatown is already a year behind schedule, but it could be pushed into 2020 after the discovery that a contractor installed 3.2 miles of the wrong grade of rail.

You can't make this stuff up.  More here.
