By the start of summer the city of Calgary will know if it has warmed up enough to plans for a new Green Line light rail track. The Calgary City Council is expected to vote on whether or not to move forward with the project on June 1.

Saving some green is the current mindset of Calgary officials when it comes to the construction of the new Green Line. Future expansion also is top of mind as the City Council will look to approve plans for the light-rail project so construction can start in the first half of 2020.

Calgary council OKs Green Line light-rail alignment

Calgary’s City Council in Alberta earlier this week approved an updated alignment for the first stage of the planned construction of the Green light-rail line, as well as changes to construction staging.  

 

The approved alignment will connect 16 Avenue North to Shepard Southeast.

 

Segment 1 of the Green Line is shovel ready, and will be constructed in three segments: Segment 1 from Elbow River to Shepard, Segment 2A from 2 Avenue SW Station to Elbow River, and Segment 2B from 16 Avenue N to north of 2 Avenue SW station.

Calgary orders 28 CAF LRVs for Green Line

CALGARY City Council has awarded CAF a €300m contract to supply 28 Urbos LRVs which will operate on the new Green Line. There is an option for a further 24 LRVs.  

 

The seven-section 42m-long LRVs will have capacity for 288 passengers with 73 seated and will be fully accessible. The contract includes the design, manufacture and commissioning of the LRVs as well as the delivery of depot parts, specialist tooling and testing equipment and a technical support and maintenance spares supply agreement.  

 

The LRVs will be used on the $C 4.9bn ($US 3.91bn) 46km north-south Green Line.  . . .
