The Weekender Alert

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has declared a state of emergency as a nor'easter is bearing down on the metropolitan area. With a blizzard warning in effect, all MTA Agencies have begun storm preparations in order to ensure safe travel across the region.

All planned subway service changes this weekend are cancelled. Use the MTA Winter Weather Travel Guide to help plan your trip before, during, & after the impending storm. If you do not need to travel, then refrain from doing so since service may be curtailed or suspended as conditions warrant.

Paratransit customers may experience additional travel and wait time. Depending on conditions, customers may want to reconsider travel, unless medically necessary.

We urge customers to monitor news reports and our website as service is subject to change as conditions demand. We will update your local news outlets regularly, and “Service Status” will provide the latest information for all of our subway, bus and rail services as well as bridge and tunnel conditions. You can also subscribe to our free email or text message alerts.

We urge all of our customers to allow extra time and take extra care when traveling during the inclement weather. Stand back from subway platform edges, always use handrails and walk carefully when entering or exiting stations, and boarding or leaving trains.

In a nutshell, no service disruptions planned for the weekend are taking place, so all subway lines are running. There are some reports that lines that have express service are running locals only. The 7 line is runing its full route between Flushing and Times Square, a rarity on weekends lately.

LIRR's Saturday afternoon update has Atlantic Terminal back on the grid, albeit operated with shuttle trains, and quite a few lines still out of service.

LIRR Service Update

The LIRR is providing limited two-hourly service to and from Farmingdale on the Ronkonkoma Branch, and to and from Huntington, Babylon and Port Washington due to snow accumulation and third rail icing conditions. LIRR is currently providing hourly Shuttle train service between Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica. Service on all other branches is suspended.

It sounds like Metro North is not expecting New Haven Line service east of Stamford to return by Monday. Governor Malloy said in a press conference that the New Haven Metro North yard has 38 inches of snow. Commuters are already being advised to drive to stations in New York State such as White Plains and use the Harlem Line instead.

Saturday night's announcement regarding LIRR service for Sunday:

Storm Recovery Update: LIRR To Restore Near-Normal Weekend Service On Most Branches by Sunday Morning

The Long Island Rail Road plans to operate service on a nearly-normal weekend schedule tomorrow (Sunday) on most branches as recovery efforts continue from Nemo, which dumped up to 30 inches of snow on parts of the Island.

By 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, the railroad plans to restore weekend operations on Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead and Oyster Bay branches in addition to the LIRR’s four busiest branches – Ronkonkoma, Huntington, Babylon and Port Washington.

The LIRR will not operate service tomorrow morning east of Ronkonkoma, east of Babylon or east of Huntington. Customers are advised to expect delays as recovery efforts continue and build in extra travel time. Please consult www.mta.info for the latest information.

The LIRR currently is operating limited service between Penn Station and Babylon, Farmingdale, Huntington, and Port Washington. The railroad is working to restore service between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma. Third rail icing has caused problems between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma on the Main Line.

“Until service is fully restored, our crews will continue working around the clock clearing snow and ice from the tracks, clearing yards, inspecting signals, train equipment, switches and grade crossings,” said LIRR President Helena Williams. “The biggest tasks right now are removing snow and clearing ice from the third rail.”

Following a storm of this magnitude and resulting service suspensions, equipment and train crews need to be repositioned in order to restore full service. Road closures have hampered the LIRR’s ability to get crews and equipment to key locations. More than 1,200 LIRR employees worked before, during and after the storm to restore as much service as possible and clear station platforms. The LIRR is keeping station waiting rooms open throughout the storm period.

This may at first seem off topic, but the results of this incident clearly could have and would have affected LIRR service had it been running. From WABC-TV, ABC-7 in New York, NY, 2/9/13:

Smithtown bowling alley roof collapses due to snow

A portion of the roof at the Smithtown Lanes bowling alley collapsed Saturday afternoon.

....

The collapse broke several sprinkler pipes, which caused water to flow onto the nearby LIRR train tracks.

What a mess.

LIRR Sunday update:

LIRR Service Update

As of 8 AM Sunday, Feb. 10, weekend service has been restored on most LIRR branches - including Ronkonkoma, Pt. Jefferson (west of Huntington), Babylon, Pt. Washington, Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Hempstead & Oyster Bay. Service remains suspended east of Ronkonkoma, Babylon & Huntington. Customers are advised to expect delays as recovery efforts continue and build in extra travel time. Customers should also expect cancellations as we move snow removal equipment around the system.

Bloomberg, 2/9/13:

Connecticut Metro North Service May Be Limited on Monday

Metro-North Railroad service in Connecticut may be limited on Feb. 11, Governor Dannel Malloy said, after parts of the New Haven line were buried under as much as 36 inches (0.9 meter) of snow.

This story here.

On the contrary, I am now hearing that enough equipment and tracks may have been dug out to operate some very limited service east of Stamford out of New Haven. Stay tuned.

OK here is Metro North's plan for Monday 2/11/13:

MTA Service Advisory

For Monday, February 11, Metro-North will operate a regular weekday schedule on the Hudson & Harlem Lines, and to/from Stamford to Grand Central on the New Haven Line. Limited AM Peak Service will be in effect to/from New Haven

For Monday, February 11, Metro-North will operate a regular weekday schedule on the Hudson & Harlem Lines, and to/from Stamford to Grand Central on the New Haven Line. Metro-North will resume limited AM Peak service on the New Haven Line between Stamford and New Haven. This service is approximately 50% of the normal AM Peak service.

The New Haven Line schedule includes:

* Regular AM peak service to/from Stamford
* Regular New Haven Line off-peak service
* Regular New Canaan and Danbury Branch (except the 6:18 AM train from Danbury which is cancelled) service resuming

Please expect possible train cancellations and combos.

Service will remain suspended on the Waterbury Branch until further notice. No substitute bus service will be provided.

This schedule is good through 3 PM on Monday. Please check the website tomorrow for information on the PM Peak service.

Trains may be crowded. Please take care when traveling and allow for additional travel time. Customers should use caution when entering and exiting trains, and on platforms and staircases.

Since many roads remain closed in the New Haven area, many train crews are having difficulty reporting to New Haven yard in order to operate train service. With parts of the line still buried under four feet of snow, there is also limited track and yard availability.

Metro-North employees continue to conduct aggressive snow clearing operations in the New Haven and Bridgeport yards and to clear track switches that allow trains to change from one track to another.
