Progressive Railroading, 8/1:

VRE set to build new station at Potomac Shores TOD

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) broke ground yesterday on a new rail station planned for the Potomac Shores master-planned community in Prince William County, Va.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the station will serve as a "vital link" in the region's commuter-rail network, said Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who joined railroad and local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony.

VRE news release, 7/31:

Developer Breaks Ground on Potomac Shores VRE Commuter Rail Station

Alexandria, VA . – SunCal, the developer of the Potomac Shores community in Prince William County
welcomed Governor Terry McAuliffe, his Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne, Virginia Railway
Express (VRE) Operations Board members, other state and local officials, and executives from CSX
Transportation to break ground on a new VRE commuter rail station today. The station located at 2451
Potomac Shores Parkway, Potomac Shores, VA will be constructed by SunCal at its expense with VRE
and CSX Transportation providing design and construction approvals. “We’ve been waiting a long time
for this to come to fruition. I’ve seen developers come and go but we got a gem in SunCal who
understands what it takes to be a partner with the community” said Prince William County Supervisor and
VRE Operations Board member Maureen Caddigan who was also served as the master of ceremonies for
the groundbreaking event.

Governor McAuliffe said “I get the link between jobs development and the need for critical transportation
infrastructure. That is why VRE is so important in linking employees to jobs throughout Northern
Virginia.”

Potomac Shores is a new waterfront community that is being designed as a transit-oriented development
(TOD) with convenient access to the future on-site VRE station and a variety of planned transportation
options. The station is just one element of VRE’s system expansion plans to provide greater mobility and
reduced traffic congestion along the I-95 and I-66 corridors. Potomac Shores station is planned to open
for service in the summer of 2017.

About the Virginia Railway Express (VRE)
VRE is the tenth largest commuter rail agency in the U.S. and is a transportation partnership of the
Northern Virginia and Potomac & Rappahannock Transportation Commissions. VRE’s mission is to
provide safe, cost effective, accessible, reliable, convenient, and comfortable commuter-oriented rail
passenger service. It serves northern Virginia and Washington D.C. and its offices are based in
Alexandria, VA. Visit our website at: www.vre.org

If Potomac Shores does build a hotel and other elements that could become potential destinations (rather than just homes that people commute from), there may be more of a need at VRE for what would now be contraflow rail service, and even midday, late evening, and weekend trains.

InsideNova.com, 7/31:

Potomac Shores VRE station construction begins next year

State and local officials ceremoniously broke ground Thursday on a new Virginia Railway Express station for Potomac Shores in south Woodbridge.

The $15 million station is planned to overlook the Potomac River from atop a hilly bluff on Cherry Hill Peninsula. The station building, still in the design phase, is planned to face a riverfront board walk. Riders will access trains via elevators that will carry them down to the tracks, which hug the shoreline below.

This description makes me think either the address in earlier posts is actually a business address for the developer, or the "master" mapping data bases (used by mapping programs and GPS navigation) have not been updated. MapQuest did not recognize "Potomac Shores;" I substituted "Dumfries" which mapped me to the same location as Google maps.

The large Potomac Shores development near Dumfries is now expected to welcome a commuter train station in early 2022.

For now, there’s a VRE sign on top of a mound of dirt on a cliff overlooking the Potomac River where the station will be built. As a Virginia Railway Express train passed the development on Tuesday, it was barely visible through the trees.
