City of OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY — With the city set to build a streetcar system in its downtown area, a team has been formed to put together a comprehensive communications plan intended to inform the public, as well as downtown retailers, property owners, and other stakeholders, of specific plans related to the streetcar system's installation, The Oklahoman reports.

The communications team consists of the City of Oklahoma City's public information office, its MAPS 3 team, Anglin Public Relations, Embark, and ADG, which is the program manager for the city's MAPS 3 program.

Once operating, the streetcars will operate on two routes using five cars, one circling the city's entertainment core, and the others servicing a route that passes the county and federal courthouses, the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, and circles Midtown.

Numerous businesses operate along the routes, so the group's plan is to work with those business and property owners to be sure their operations are disrupted as little as possible. For the full story, click here.

A streetcar named "disaster"?

OKLAHOMA CITY -- While the official groundbreaking for the nearly 7-mile-long streetcar line - connecting Automobile Alley, Bricktown, Central Business District and Midtown - is not until Feb. 7, very few people are talking excitedly about the streetcar, which is being forced on the city, a city that still needs to improve its bus service and bus stop benches. It's an elitist project that ignores the real needs of many of the city's residents.

The interesting facet of this operation is that it will have essentially two routes. One loop will remain in the Bricktown district, while the other will cover the same loop but will also run to the business district and Midtown. Reminds me of Little Rock, where one loop stays in downtown Little Rock while the longer loop that includes the smaller one also runs over the Arkansas River to North Little Rock.
