Durham-Orange County Light Rail Heads to the Federal Government

 

GoTriangle's board of trustees approved updated transit plans for Durham and Orange counties today, allowing a proposed light rail transit system connecting the two counties to move forward for federal grant approval.

Within a few weeks, GoTriangle will learn whether the $3.3 billion Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit project will be allowed to move to the next phase of a federal grant application process.

Feds approve next step for Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit

 

 

The Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit project has received a green light from the Federal Transit Administration.

 

Jeff Mann, general manager of regional transit authority GoTriangle, notified Durham and Orange county commissioners Friday that the light rail project had secured approval from the Federal Transit Administration to proceed into the full engineering phase.

Durham-Orange County light rail enters engineering phase

 

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Durham and Orange County light-rail project to enter the engineering phase, which maintains the project's eligibility for more than $1 billion in federal money.

A proposed change to the $2.5 billion Durham-Orange Light-Rail Transit plan could make it easier for people to hop the train to dinner and a show in downtown Durham.

Do you have ideas for what visitors and residents should see and experience when they ride on the future Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit line?


The 17.7-mile, $2.47 billion system will link UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill with Duke and N.C. Central universities in Durham, along with points in between. There will be 19 stations, each of which could have its own unique appearance and feeling.

Durham Mayor Steve Schewel is feeling confident about the Durham-Orange Light Rail project.

 

“This is actually going to happen, yo,” he said at a transportation summit Tuesday at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Light rail funding continues to stay on track

 

The light rail project in Orange County took a big step forward in late January when Wake County officials helped clear the way for the project to gain state funding. Now, the goal to have reliable, sustainable transportation between Durham and Orange counties seems to be striding closer to reality.
