VRE Train Talk Alert, 12/7:
Schedule Change Update
We would like to thank everyone for your patience and flexibility as we implemented the new system wide train schedules last week. While one week is not long enough to confirm any trends in ridership patterns, we are analyzing the data every day to see if opportunities for improvement exist.
The changes we would be looking at now would simply be consist swaps, moving the longest train consist to the trains which are carrying the most passengers. Since we are heading in to the holiday season where ridership patterns change due to vacations, and other alterations to personal schedules, we will make the consist swaps, if necessary, after the first of the year.
A few things we have already noticed include:
- The new train, slotted between 301 and the former 303, has been very popular, carrying between 550 and 650 passengers each day.
- The former 303, which was moved 10 minutes earlier to allow for separation from Amtrak train 125, remains popular, carrying 500-600 passengers per day.
- The new 307 has carried the most passengers all week, between 900 and 1300. If this pattern continues, we expect to move the 8 car consist to that train.
- Trip time on both lines has increased on an average of 3-5 minutes. This is because all trains are scheduled as if they are 8 car consists. Since our goal is to get to all 8 car sets, we will now be able to add the capacity over time, without further changes to the schedule. This also gives us a consistent schedule that our partner bus and shuttle services may use to adjust their service.
We appreciate all of the feedback we have received and welcome continued comments and suggestions.
