BART San Jose Extension on Track to Begin Heavy Construction in 2024: Officials

The six-mile, four station extension will add four new stations at 28th Street in San Jose's Little Portugal, near the intersection of Santa Clara and Market streets in downtown San Jose, the San Jose Diridon rail depot and a ground-level station near PayPal Park in Santa Clara.

BART and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority are on track to begin construction of BART's downtown San Jose extension by 2024, officials with the two transit agencies said Friday.

Design and construction officials with BART and the VTA said in a joint meeting that tunnel boring and other heavy station construction activities are likely to start in earnest within the next two years, barring unforeseen delays.

The six-mile, four station extension will add four new stations at 28th Street in San Jose's Little Portugal, near the intersection of Santa Clara and Market streets in downtown San Jose, the San Jose Diridon rail depot and a ground-level station near PayPal Park in Santa Clara.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) late last week received approval to pursue federal funding for the second phase of the BART Silicon Valley Extension project.

Funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) would cover up to 50% of project costs, or $4 billion, VTA officials said in a press release. The transit agency will be able to apply for twice the amount of funding anticipated under the previous pilot project delivery program through the FTA's New Starts Funding program.

BART Ridership Forecast Could Redefine South Bay Transit

One of the country's largest infrastructure projects, carrying Bay Area Rapid Transit trains through downtown San Jose, is taking shape. Nevertheless, the number of passengers who will use the extension—and its future as a key component for regional transport—is becoming increasingly uncertain.

A newly published ridership forecast predicts a 40% drop in passengers from previous projections for BART’s South Bay extension by local transportation authorities, according to a local news report. In 2040, instead of 54,600 people boarding trains on their way to business centers and San Jose State University, a new legally mandated forecast predicts 32,900 boardings.

It’s a setback for the long-awaited BART expansion, which could impact funding for South Bay bus and BART services . . .

VTA’s BART to Silicon Valley Completion Costs Rise to $12.2B

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The estimated cost of VTA BART to Silicon Valley has risen due to inflation and other factors.

The estimated cost of VTA BART to Silicon Valley has risen due to inflation and other factors. Construction materials, labor, and inflation impacts have risen the cost of the final phase of VTA’s BART to Silicon Valley completion. Originally, $9.3 billion, VTA management confirms the higher estimate of $12.2 billion is still within its means.

VTA General Manager and CEO, Carolyn Gonot said: “All major U.S. infrastructure projects are, unfortunately, impacted by extreme inflationary costs. . . The good news is that the strong fiscal position of VTA and other funding sources provide a funding plan that can absorb the increase.”  . . .
