Progressive Railroading, 9/27/16:

PANYNJ OKs $400 million in PATH tunnel repairs

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's (PANYNJ) board has approved a $400 million overhaul of two Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail tunnels damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Story here. Wow, 8 years! When it wraps in 2026 it will be 14 years since the storm that did the most damage (although some of it is no doubt due to old age). And in that timeframe, how sure are they that another storm might do more damage and negate their progress?

On weekends, trains are already crowded most of the day. Single tracking is only going to make it worse as the headways will need to be lengthened. Waits will be longer as well for the privilege of becoming a sardine.
