De Blasio’s Proposed Ferry and Streetcar Services May Compete For Riders

Two of Mayor Bill de Blasio's biggest transportation initiatives might actually be detrimental to each other, Politico reports, based on findings from a city-commissioned report released last week on the Brooklyn-Queens Connector.

Second Avenue Sagas, 4/27/16:

Inside the city’s report on the Brooklyn-Queens Connector

There’s a table in the city’s assessment of the proposed Brooklyn-Queens Streetcar that drives home the inherent tensions in the city’s plan. Over 70 percent of the expected ridership is going to use the streetcar as they would a bus. That is, instead of connecting neighborhoods in ways that the Mayor has repeatedly said it would, the streetcar will simply be another means for people to get from their homes to the subway and back.

New details emerge for the BQX, New York City’s proposed waterfront streetcar route

At breakfast talk hosted by the Brooklyn Waterfront Research Center earlier this month, Harris Schechtman, national director of transit at Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants, gave academics and members of the public a full run-down of plans for the Brooklyn-Queens Connector (BQX), a proposed waterfront streetcar link that would connect neighborhoods between Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Astoria, Queens.

The Mayor’s Brooklyn-Queens Streetcar Plan Gets a Czar

In a sign that the planned BQX rail line along the Brooklyn and Queens waterfront is chugging toward reality, the de Blasio administration has hired a streetcar czar: Adam Giambrone, sometime archaeologist, ex-Canadian politician, light-rail booster, former head of Toronto’s transit system, and, for one disastrous week in 2010, candidate for mayor of Toronto. Tall and athletic with a spiky crew cut and a Boy Scout demeanor, the 39-year-old Giambrone comes to the job with both experience and baggage — and with knowledge of New York sketchy enough that at one point during an interview he referred to the “Downtown East Side.”

SNIP:

Giambrone’s job one is to go out and convince the people who live along the BQX’s proposed route that they should embrace years of construction, rejiggered streets, and the loss of free parking for their own and the greater good.

He will fail unless he builds a grass root coalition of citizens, politicians, and business leaders to endorse the project.   :(    Sloan

Toronto’s Transit Advice for New York: Give Streetcars Their Own Lanes

TORONTO — As the streetcar crept along Queen Street West in clogged traffic through the heart of downtown, anxiety started to rise among those inside. Commuters checked the time, calculating how late they would be for work.

The red-and-white trolley did not feel like rapid transit.
