SNIP:

Sources at City Hall and around town are telling me that a group of midtown residents backed by the KC Regional Transit Alliance is close to announcing a major expansion plan that would run the fledgling system from the station to the Country Club Plaza and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

KC Streetcar Authority

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With the deadline for public response pleadings to extend Kansas City’s streetcar system ending without comment, a grassroots campaign to expand the downtown line can no move forward, The Kansas City Star reports.

Supporters want to build on the momentum from the 2.2-mile starter line that launched in May and go south about 3.75 miles. A court petition filed Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance sets out proposed boundaries for an expanded streetcar district, and proposed property and sales tax increases within that district to help pay the projected $227 million cost.

The new system would conceivably open in 2022. For the full story, click here.

Should KC streetcar go to riverfront park? Study expected soon

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority expects to choose a consultant next week to study the feasibility of extending the downtown streetcar route north to Berkley Riverfront Park.

But Gerend said he’s still researching whether it’s possible to purchase two more CAF vehicles similar to those acquired for the starter route.

Naw, get a couple of double truck Birney replicas from Gomaco. Delivery time will be faster than CAF and their presence will bring a cachet to the city in much the same way Tampa and Little Rock have experienced........IMHO. Sloan

New KC petition would require a citywide vote for streetcar expansion

A Kansas City group has filed petition signatures with the city clerk’s office seeking to require a citywide vote before any streetcar expansion can occur.

The city attorney’s office will review the petition to see if it’s legal and passes constitutional muster.

The petitions were turned in late Tuesday to the city clerk’s office and will be forwarded to election authorities to see if they meet the threshold of 1,708 valid signatures of registered voters to place a measure on a Kansas City ballot.

Looks like Kansas City's perennial streetcar haters have come out of the woodwork again. Sloan

Trump’s budget could affect Kansas City streetcar expansion

President Donald Trump’s proposed budget could eliminate one funding source for a possible expansion of Kansas City’s streetcar line.

http://www.kansascit...e139244423.html

This is the opening salvo for government projects in the net fiscal year. There will be a lot of "horse trading" before the final budget arrives on President Trump's desk for signing. That said, all members of the pro-rail community should contact their legislators to encourage favorable action on new and existing rail projects.

Gordon Criswell, assistant county administrator for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, said that the county had hoped to apply for TIGER funds to implement a Bus Rapid Transit route in Kansas City, Kan., in the future.

Kansas is like Ohio when it comes considering passenger rail. Kansas City, KS had a chance, ten years ago, to get federal money for a commuter rail line from Olathe, KS to Kansas City, MO; but instead dithered over express bus service and now wants BRT.

Oh well. Sloan

Two proposals on table for Streetcar expansion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Proposals to expand the Kansas City Streetcar line north to Berkley Park in the Riverfront area were reviewed with residents Wednesday at a public briefing in the River Market area at Steamboat Arabia.

http://www.kshb.com/...etcar-expansion

Notice the proposed extension shows repurposing an existing bridge to take streetcars to the river front. This is deja vu from the PCC era. Kansas City along with Baltimore, San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Boston had massive viaducts for trolleys. Boston's Lechmere connection and Pittsburgh's Palm Garden trestle are still in use.
