Adirondack to be cancelled in northern New York State, Canada for more than a month: News and analysis

By Bob Johnston | May 9, 2024

No alternate transportation provided; Amtrak website lacks explanation

ALBANY, N.Y. — Amtrak’s Adirondack will be cancelled north of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. between May 20 and June 29, passengers already ticketed on the New York City-Montreal train were informed this week.

Anyone trying to book a reservation for those dates on Amtrak’s website receives the message, “We do not have any services between the cities entered on the date(s) you selected. Please try different date(s).” As of today (Thursday, May 9), the “Service Alerts and Notices” section of the website does not include an advisory with information on the cancellation or informing passengers when service will be available.

The Adirondack will continue to operate as a daily round trip on its existing schedule between New York City and Saratoga Springs,   . . .

.... which is where it turned last summer when the train was also annulled for a few months due to extreme slow orders within Canada.

Amtrak, CN Railway reach deal on repairs for Montreal service

Passenger rail between Saratoga Springs and Montreal expected tor resume in August

ALBANY —  Upcoming track work in Canada is expected to mitigate long-standing issues that have plagued the passenger rail service between Saratoga Springs and Montreal, following an agreement between Amtrak and CN Railway.

“After years of waiting, we will soon be able to say 'full steam ahead' for fully restoring this vital for the Capital Region and North Country economies,” U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said in a statement.

The agreement “paves the way for the track work that will improve safety and efficiency along the Adirondack route,” Schumer said. The improvements are to allow for service to run more smoothly and regularly, he said.

CBC News, Montreal, Canada 5/18/24

Passenger rail service suspended between Montreal and NYC after CN-Amtrak deal

Service suspended between May 20 and June 30

Amtrak says no passenger trains are set to run between Montreal and New York City for at least the next six weeks due to maintenance work after it struck a deal with Canadian National Railway Co.

Schedules show that service on the U.S. railway between Canada's second-biggest city and the upstate New York town of Whitehall has been halted between May 20 and June 30 — just before high season begins to peak.

In an email Saturday, Amtrak and CN said they had reached an agreement that would see the Montreal-based freight railway draw on a settlement payment from Amtrak to carry out work on the tracks.

The so-called Adirondack route is no stranger to disruption, after Amtrak suspended the only daily train between Montreal and New York City last summer — a move that followed a three-year halt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just of note....  Whitehall, NY does still have a train operating through it, in the name of the Ethan Allen Express.  However it branches off the mainline used by the Adirondack before the Whitehall station to go east towards Vermont.   Fort Edward station, which is north of Saratoga, still has service.
