Communications

We will continue to provide periodic updates on SEPTA's Website. There is a link on the homepage of www.septa.org and we would ask customers to go to our website to learn about what SEPTA is doing to respond to the virus.

We are also using all of the digital screens at station entrances, platform areas, and on vehicles to remind riders about proper Passenger Etiquette and the role they play in maintaining a clean and healthy system.

SEPTA's page is here, but the language generally sends you around in circles.

‘Mounting’ losses prompt SEPTA to cut exec pay, eliminate overtime, consider further service reductions

Faced with plummeting ridership and service reductions amid the coronavirus crisis, SEPTA is taking steps to mitigate “mounting operating losses” while it awaits possible federal relief funding for transportation agencies across the nation.

SEPTA has instituted a 10% pay reduction for General Manager Leslie S. Richards and its executive team, effective immediately, Richards wrote in a letter sent to employees Friday. Other “cost-cutting measures” have been or will be put into place, “including elimination of overtime, a freeze on new hires, eliminating marketing efforts where possible, eliminating nonessential employee travel," while it also weighs additional service reductions on Regional Rail and other forms of transit.

Richards called the steps “difficult short-term measures" as the situation poises the transportation agency to project at least a $150 million loss for this fiscal year, ending June 30. The agency had been working with a $7.3 million surplus in the months prior.

PA: Despite uncertainty, SEPTA moves forward with virtual fare proposal hearings

To get its new fare policy in place by July, SEPTA plans to hold its required public meetings virtually, getting rider feedback online rather than put people at risk during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mar. 26--To get its new fare policy in place by July, SEPTA plans to hold its required public meetings virtually, getting rider feedback online rather than put people at risk during the coronavirus pandemic. But transit advocates have concerns.

Yasha Zarrinkelk, organizer of the newly formed Transit Forward Philadelphia coalition, wants to be sure SEPTA is providing as many options for voices to be heard, such as through mail or phone surveys.

"I just think having these sort of alternatives would allow SEPTA to get that comprehensive input," Zarrinkelk said.

SEPTA and union agree to new safety measures, averting crisis

After a standoff over worker safety that threatened to derail the commutes of thousands of health care workers last week, the union that represents SEPTA employees has declared a victory.

Transport Workers United Local 234 said in a release that its fight for “enhanced safety measures” had resulted in a number of improvements, including regular COVID-19 testing employees and temperature checks.

SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch confirmed the agency had come to an agreement with the union and said it is in the process of acquiring necessary equipment and nailing down other details of the new protocols.
