Copper thieves cause commuter chaos

Copper thieves have caused commuter chaos this morning, delaying trains after stealing cabling along lines in Melbourne's west.

Thieves stole copper cabling from sections of the Sydenham and Werribee lines, including a large amount from the Laverton Junction area.

This used to be a chronic problem in India which caused Indian Railways to substitute ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) for Copper cables. Apparently it is too expensive to separate the Aluminum from the Steel when compared to just melting down the copper cable and selling off the copper in makeshift ingots.
