A debate over whether the monorail is needed. From Sydney Morning Herald, 1/14/12:

The Question: Does Sydney need a monorail?

THE Sydney monorail is a novelty ride whose novelty value has long worn off.

Sydney Morning Herald, 1/9/12:

Monorail: build it and they will come, except they didn't

A quarter of a century ago, debate raged about the future of the city's western fringe.

Here's this one.

And that's a wrap. But the good news is that it gets replaced by light rail. ABC Australia, 3/23/12:

Last stop: Sydney's monorail to be scrapped

Sydney's monorail is heading for the scrap heap.

The New South Wales Government has announced that it has bought Metro Transport Sydney (MTS), the company that owns the monorail and light rail, in a $19.8 million deal.

It is part of the plan to re-develop the Darling Harbour Convention Centre and precinct.

Details here.

End of the line nears for maligned monorail

A spokesman for Transport NSW said 90 per cent of the pylons, tracks and cars would be recycled. Two carriages could be preserved and displayed in the Powerhouse Museum.

In terms of speed from Harbourside to Town Hall, there is no quicker (currently 13 minutes) more frequent (every five minutes) service than the monorail.
If the monorail is going to be replaced by a new George Street tramline, wouldn't it be more sensible to have this finished before we close the monorail?
