Saturday January 20 – Dinner & Gala

Join us for an evening of dinner, dancing and fun at The Hotel Roanoke as we celebrate Saturday, January 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. We are excited to honor Bev Fitzpatrick’s legacy of a lifetime of service to this region.

From a Patrick Henry High School student cutting class to attend Virginia Museum of Transportation Board Meetings, to being our region’s ambassador, and everything in between. Bev has diligently served, always putting others before himself. The night includes a chance to gather with friends, reminisce through the years, and help sustain Bev’s legacy at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. We’ll have a photo booth, silent and live auctions and music throughout the evening. Capacity is limited so please purchase tickets now.

Buy a table for $800 and receive dinner for eight and eight drink tickets. Individual tickets are available for $100 and include dinner only. A cash bar will be available. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

5:30 p.m. Cocktail Reception and Silent Auction

7:00 p.m. Dinner and Program

8:00 p.m. Dancing and Fun!

The Hotel Roanoke has a special rate for guests of The Fitzpatrick Farewell Dinner & Gala Saturday, January 20 if they’d like to spend the night at the hotel. The discounted rate is $129 per room plus tax. Book at the discounted rate here.

Sunday January 21

Hang out with Bev and friends at the museum! Join us Sunday, January 21 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. to mix and mingle while checking out all the great exhibits the museum has to offer. This is your time to spend with Bev  – chit chat, sign an autograph, whatever you want, it’s up to you! Normal museum admission applies.

Classic Trains  'Mileposts' blog 12/12/17:

Big transition at the home of N&W’s Big Three

This wouldn’t ordinarily be the place to report on the comings and goings of railroad museum personnel, but the transition announced last week by the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke is momentous. The city is, after all, the place David P. Morgan called “the Alamo for Steam.”

Examples of Norfolk & Western's 'Big Three' of steam — Class J 4-8-4 No. 604, Y6 2-8-8-2 No. 2147, and Class A 2-6-6-4 No. 1212 — are lined up for a publicity photo in April 1943. N&W photo

After a hard fought and successful 11-year run, the museum’s executive director Bev Fitzpatrick is retiring on January 1. Succeeding him will be Lisa Sphar, a marketing and community development specialist based right in Roanoke. She was selected by the VMT board after a nationwide search.

I’ll say more on both Fitzpatrick and Sphar in a moment, but first some observations on the museum and its recent history.

Continue here.
