There was a guy on my NJT train this morning who could not get his smart phone to connect and display his monthly pass. Eventually the conductor got tired of waiting for him and accepted his pleas to take his word for it that he was a regular daily passenger. Sometimes technology fails. It's good to have paper as a backup.
