Communications failure hampers efforts to restore MBTA service

BOSTON —A communications failure hampered the MBTA as it struggled to restore service, after the blizzard forced it to suspend service in advance of the storm.
Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Richard Davey said they would work to restore some subway service Sunday, but restoration of the entire bus, trolley and subway system would be unlikely before Monday.

Communications failure hampers efforts to restore MBTA service

BOSTON —A communications failure hampered the MBTA as it struggled to restore service, after the blizzard forced it to suspend service in advance of the storm.

WCVB Boston

"A communications tower in Quincy is down, which makes train service impossible," said Richard Davey, Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation on Saturday. The tower is used to deliver instructions to the entire transit system.

I hope in their "postmortem" analysis they recognize that this tower became a single-point failure that is impacting the entire transit system. Would a future failure on a clear, sunny day shut down the entire transit system? I hope they establish a backup so any future failure does not.
