L’Enfant Plaza station evacuated for smoke

 

L’Enfant Plaza station was evacuated for smoke on Monday afternoon, shutting down rail service for a large portion of the Green and Yellow Lines, Metro Transit Police said on Twitter.

 

Trains were not operating from Navy Yard on the Green Line and Pentagon City on the Yellow Line through Mount Vernon Square, Metro said.

 

The Blue, Orange and Silver Lines, which also pass through L’Enfant Plaza, were bypassing the station, but service was not affected at other stops.

L’Enfant Plaza temporarily closed; rail service impacted on 5 lines

 

WASHINGTON — The L’Efant Plaza Metro station has been evacuated and is temporarily closed due to smoke in the station.

 

Metro Transit Police and fire department personnel are on scene to try and determine the source of the smoke.

 

Metro has activated the tunnel fans to ventilate the area.

WTOP "Live Interview" 4:10 pm:

 

Metro spekesman Dan Stessel is advising commuters to find alternate transportation (including Metrobus).  There are significant delays developing on 5 Metrorail lines with no estimate of when normal service will resume.

 

Tunnel fans are doing their job, but the source of the smoke remains undetermined.

Metro Transit Police and fire department personnel are on scene at L'Enfant Plaza for smoke in the station.

 

The source of the smoke has not been determined. The station has been evacuated and is temporarily closed at this time.

 

Metro has activated tunnel fans to ventilate the area.

 

Service Information:

•  Green Line service is SUSPENDED between Navy Yard and Mt Vernon Square.

•  Yellow Line service is SUSPENDED between Pentagon City and Mt Vernon Square.

•  Blue/Orange/Silver line trains are BYPASSING L'Enfant Plaza (passing through the station without stopping).

•  L'Enfant Plaza is closed.

•  Riders should consider alternate travel options. To view bus options, use Metro's trip planner and select the "bus only" option. Expect significant delays.

- elevated to 2-alarm fire response (8 engines; numerous ambulances standing-by)

- source of smoke is still undetermined

- several people from evacuated from station platform are being treated for smoke inhalation

- a train is being evacuated (line/direction not reported); all evacuated passengers being examined for smoke inhalation

- shuttle bus service has been established

A train filled w/smoke

 

Smoke is described as "Heavy, Choking;"  source is on the Yellow/Green lines

6 tranported to hospitals, reported; 1 serious

 

full "traige" staton set up; some people being treated with oxygen on a bus - just pulled away (presumably to a medical facility)

Metro Green/Yellow line alternate service info

 

Green Line shuttle bus boarding locations:
• Navy Yard - NJ Ave & M St SE
• Waterfront - M St & 4th SW
• L'Enfant Plaza - C St & 7th St SW
• Archives - Pennsylvania Ave & 7th Street NW • Gallery Place - H St & 7th St NW • Mt Vernon Sq - M St & 7th St NW

 

Yellow Line customers should use Blue Line service for travel between Downtown DC & Virginia.

 

Yellow & Green Line customers at Mt Vernon Sq may use Metrobus Route 70 or 79 to reach Gallery Place & Archives.

 

Non-Metro Alternatives:
• DC Circulator - From M St/Navy Yard: 2 different routes available to either Eastern Market (OR/SV/BL Metrorail) or Union Station (Metrorail Red Line). SmarTrip accepted.
• VRE - Fredericksburg Line from Union Station or L'Enfant Plaza to Crystal City, King Street-Alexandria and Franconia-Springfield.

Green/Yellow Service Update - 5:40 p.m.

 

As of 5:40 p.m., Green/Yellow line service has been restored at Gallery Place Station for service to/from stations north (toward Greenbelt).  Green/Yellow service remains suspended between Gallery Place and Navy Yard/Pentagon.

 

Yellow Line riders traveling between Virginia and DC should use the Blue Line as an alternate.

 

Allow additional travel time.
