Whew! Florida Governor Rick Scott, after a series of significant budget vetoes, lets The Wave have some cash.

Broward County, the state's second-largest, scored more than $1 billion in local projects, including money for Broward College, a Fort Lauderdale International Airport runway extension, and $25 million for a downtown Fort Lauderdale Wave Streetcar transit system.

Resident Eric Jaiven described the initial phase as a "merry-go-round that goes nowhere."

But Commissioner Bobby DuBose said no change happens all at once. The hope is that the streetcar system will eventually connect to the airport, port, Tri-Rail and other destinations.

And it would obviously make the most sense to have some intermodalism, that is, serving the TriRail (and Amtrak) station. Across town, also run it near the future station that will serve All Aboard Florida and hopefully another Amtrak train along the FEC tracks. (Potentially another TriRail line may run along FEC too.)

The first set of tracks hasn't been laid yet for the city's planned $142.6 million Wave electric streetcar project, but officials are already considering a $7.2 million upgrade.

SIX REASONS FORT LAUDERDALE'S WAVE STREETCAR IS A BAD IDEA Back in 2003, building a streetcar in downtown Fort Lauderdale seemed like a great idea. Las Olas Boulevard and the Riverfront area were growing more and more popular. It looked like it was only a matter of time before the city was overrun with people and, inevitably, more traffic. A study showed that the city should invest in better transportation and improve the pedestrian experience downtown.

Text and video of proposed route here:

I agree with the writer that the proposed station shelters are poorly designed.  Someone waiting for a streetcar in the middle of a Florida rainstorm will not get much protection.  I also agree that slow speed will not attract riders.  Based on the route shown in the video, I would think most of the line should be boulevard running with passing loops to separate streetcars from auto traffic. Also traffic signal pre-emption should be in place to enhance transit speed.
