Minneapolis, MN Star-Tribune, 2/27/15:

Bottineau LRT stops draw skepticism from Golden Valley neighbors

Parking, safety and high-density housing weighed heavily on the minds of some Golden Valley residents Thursday night as they considered plans to build a new light-rail stop near their homes.

The Metropolitan Council has budgeted for the Bottineau light-rail line to stop just once beside Theodore Wirth Park, but wants public feedback on whether to build the station at Plymouth Avenue, Golden Valley Road or both.

Snip:

Along the route in Minneapolis is a Laotian community garden that some fear could be eliminated as the line is built.

Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN 10/30:

Editorial

Doing nothing is the costliest transit plan for Twin Cities

Revised price for Bottineau light-rail line should be kept in perspective.

ows_144624706730279.jpg?w=525
Richard Sennott • Star Tribune file photoBoth Blue Line and Green Line extensions (Bottineau and Southwest, respectively) are proposed for light rail in the Twin Cities area.

Investing in transit projects is expensive, but doing nothing to address growing gridlock would prove even more costly to the Twin Cities economy.

That’s the thought Minnesotans should keep in mind as they consider the nearly $500 million increase in the estimated cost of the proposed 13-mile Bottineau light-rail line (also called the Blue Line Extension) that would travel from Target Field in downtown Minneapolis to near Target’s corporate campus in Brooklyn Park.

The revised $1.48 billion price tag is not the result of any mismanagement by the Metropolitan Council, which would build and operate the line. The higher cost reflects the additional data now available after 15 percent of the engineering and environmental work has been completed. Previous estimates were based on just 1 percent of that work being finished.  .  .  .

SNIP

The existing Blue and Green LRT lines have strong and growing ridership numbers. Extending them to promote economic growth — or finding effective alternatives — would be a long-term investment in the region’s vitality.

Progressive Railroading, 12/10/15:

Metropolitan Council to submit Metro Blue Line extension plans for local approval

The Minneapolis region's Metropolitan Council yesterday approved an updated project scope and $1.496 billion cost estimate for the planned Metro Blue Line light-rail transit (LRT) extension, which now includes 11 stations.

The council's vote means staff will now submit the project for municipal consent from Hennepin County and the corridor cities of Minneapolis, Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, Crystal and Brooklyn Park, Minn.
