    Somerville and Medford mayors discuss Green Line extension, T's largest expansion in decades  

 

 

Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne remembers it well. In 2005, Ballantyne says, her young daughter spoke at a public meeting that considered the plan for the MBTA's Green Line to expand into Somerville and Medford. Ballantyne says her second-grader stood up and told the Massachusetts Transportation Secretary that she wanted to "see clean air for my friends."

MBTA's Green Line extension finally opens

 

Many thought the day would never come, but the completed Green Line extension from Cambridge to Medford opens Monday.

 

Details: Riders will be able to take the MBTA's streetcar line from the current terminal at Lechmere Station in East Cambridge all the way to the new Medford/Tufts station at Tufts University.

• The route also includes new stations at Ball Square, Magoun Square, Gilman Square and East Somerville.

Why it matters: The new line is a boon for Tufts, which will have direct access from campus to downtown Boston for the first time.

    Opening Day: The Green Line Arrives In Medford  

 

 

At 4:51 this morning, a packed Green Line train rang its bell and started rolling south from the new Medford/Tufts station to officially open the Green Line Extension’s Medford Branch to passenger service after decades’ worth of planning and delays.
