Meet the Fleet: Improved climate control a highly anticipated feature of new trainsThe Fleet of the Future train cars that begin arriving later this year for testing will have state-of-the-art climate control technology that's not only more comfortable, but more energy-efficient as well.
Hot cars are a common complaint from riders on BART's oldest-in-the-nation trains. From July 1, 2014 - June 5, 2015, more than 200 riders took the time to call or email customer services with climate complaints, and many more used social media to vent with tweets like "hot as the devil's toenails" (one of the milder ones).
BART has worked to maintain the aging HVAC -- heating, ventilation and air conditioning -- system on current cars, but major relief will come with the new cars, scheduled to begin passenger service in 2016. (The Board of Directors receives a semi-annual update on the new cars at its meeting this Thursday, June 11, to be webcast at www.bart.gov/board)This is the first installment of our new series Meet the Fleet, looking in depth at different features of the new trains that will be of interest to customers. One of the challenges to climate control is the wide divergence of temperatures in the Bay Area, as illustrated in the graphic below. Read the full story.

Behind the scenes, BART's new train cars undergo extensive testing for safety, reliability
BART's new train cars are in an important phase that is largely out of the public eye -- but these key steps are propelling the project forward to reality.
What's going on now doesn't have the sizzle of, say, showing off different seat models or color palettes. It's critical, however, for the top priority of ensuring a safe and reliable system that will last for decades to come.
John Garnham, group manager for the rail vehicle capital program, gave BART directors an update on the status of the project at the June 11 Board meeting. Read more.

Three Doors on New Train Cars to Reduce Noise, Improve Reliability, Increase Capacity
What a difference three doors can make. Of all the thousands of decisions that went into designing BART's new train cars, one -- a change in the number of doors -- may prove one of the most momentous. For 43 years now, riders have known the familiar BART train cars with two doors on each side. All that changes with the new Fleet of the Future cars, which are scheduled to begin arriving for testing later this year.
"The issue we have today is that people are concerned they can't get off a crowded train, so they cluster near the doors," said Henry Kolesar, group manager for vehicle maintenance engineering. When that happens it takes longer for every to get off and onto the train, which increases "dwell time" -- the amount of time a train sits in the station before it moves again. Meet the Fleet: Passenger information systems get a big upgrade on new trains coming to BART
You know the feeling. Early-morning BART commute, you're zoning out, the train slows and you momentarily panic: Is this my stop? I can't see a sign, and I didn’t hear the announcement. Some stations look a lot alike. Do I rush off here? Stay on until the next stop? Ask a fellow passenger?

And the planned passenger information system got even better last week when the Board of Directors unanimously authorized a major upgrade. Read more.
