Montgomery Co. Council questions rising Purple Line cost

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Montgomery County leaders grilled state officials Monday about the latest cost estimates for the proposed Purple Line that would have the county contribute more to the $2.4 billion light rail line.

The briefing with state officials comes just days before the project goes before a state board for a critical contracting vote and weeks after Montgomery County Council members griped about changes to the county’s share of the construction costs last month. Officials from the Maryland Transit Administration along with the county’s Department of Transportation outlined some of the changes to the project, but several council members focused on the rising price tag.

“I want to go back to the money,” said Councilman Craig Rice. “I’m really trying to understand exactly what it is we’re on the hook for,” he told MTA officials.

Maryland board approves $5.6-billion Purple Line contract

Maryland’s Board of Public Works approved a $5.6 billion contract Wednesday for a team of companies to build and operate a light-rail Purple Line in the Washington suburbs.

The board voted 3-0 after a 30-minute discussion.

“This is going to be a nationally recognized project,” said state comptroller Peter Franchot (D). “The Millennials around the country who have so many economic dreams are going to flock to the Maryland suburbs because of this project. This is an absolute game changer.”

Greater Greater Washington, 4/7/16:

The Purple Line will have America's longest railcars

According to the latest plans for Maryland's Purple Line, it will have the longest transit railcars in America. Each train will have a single 136-foot-long five-segment railcar. They'll practically be open-gangway trains.

Purple Line to link job centers in Maryland’s two largest counties

WASHINGTON — While some Montgomery County residents continue to fight Maryland’s Purple Line, a regional panel got an update on the 16-mile light rail project designed to link job centers in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties by 2022.

Among the questions that came up in Wednesday’s Transportation Planning Board meeting, one was prevalent: How much will riders pay to use the Purple Line?

The Washington Post, 5/29:

Purple Line’s foes add Metro safety, maintenance problems to legal argument

Metro’s mounting maintenance and safety problems have provided a fresh legal argument for opponents of the Purple Line, who say Maryland can’t afford to build a new light-rail line when the subway system it will connect to needs millions in repairs.

In an ongoing federal lawsuit, opponents also argue that Maryland officials can’t prove the Washington region needs another rail line when Metro has steadily lost riders over the past six years. Riders transferring to and from Metro are projected to make up about one-third of the ridership of the 16.2-mile Purple Line in the Washington suburbs.

Court ruling on Purple Line could set back light-rail construction
Construction of the light-rail Purple Line in the Washington suburbs could be delayed based on a federal judge’s ruling Wednesday requiring that the project’s ridership forecasts be redone to account for Metro’s deterioration and declining ridership.
