Union Pacific Reports Positive Train Control Progress: Installation Completed and Passenger Routes Implemented

Omaha, Neb., February 5, 2019

Union Pacific installed Positive Train Control (PTC) equipment on 100 percent of required route miles and implemented on all required passenger train routes. Implementation efforts continue to ensure PTC interoperability with other freight and passenger railroads operating on Union Pacific tracks by 2020, as allowed by federal law.

One of the most challenging parts of PTC implementation is ensuring system interoperability among all U.S. rail lines and locomotives. Given the various readiness levels of North American freight and passenger railroads, including publicly funded commuter lines and short lines, it is important that all railroads continue working together to maintain the health, safety, resiliency, and fluidity of the rail network during PTC implementation.

Union Pacific's fourth quarter 2018 accomplishments, between October 1 and December 21, 2018, included:

  • Educating 606 employees on PTC operations, bringing the total number of employees trained to 26,610 or 100 percent. PTC education is ongoing as Union Pacific retrains employees and introduces the system to new employees. Training materials are tailored to a variety of employee roles, including engineer, conductor, dispatcher, maintenance of way/engineering, mechanical, signal, telecom and information technologies.
  • Increasing by 1,095 the number of implemented PTC route miles, bringing the total number of route miles in PTC operations to 13,015 or 76 percent. Four out of five passenger rail carriers are currently operating PTC-equipped trains over Union Pacific lines.

With the FRA's conditional approval of Union Pacific's PTC safety plan on April 26, 2017, Union Pacific is running PTC operations on more than 13,000 miles in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Union Pacific and freight and passenger railroads continue working together to safely implement PTC on the remaining 4,000 required route miles.

Union Pacific Reports Positive Train Control Progress

Omaha, Neb., July 23, 2019

Union Pacific implemented Positive Train Control (PTC) on 1,081 route miles in the second quarter of 2019, bringing required PTC-operated route miles to 14,678 or 86 percent. PTC was implemented on all required passenger routes in 2018. Union Pacific Completes Positive Train Control Implementation; Interoperability Efforts Continue

Omaha, Neb., December 16, 2019

Union Pacific recently completed Positive Train Control (PTC) implementation, activating its final track segment. The technology is now implemented on all the company's federally mandated rail lines, including required passenger train routes. Union Pacific will continue working with partner railroads on their interoperability efforts, ensuring seamless operation onto the company's tracks.

PTC is designed to prevent four specific types of incidents:

  • Train-to-train collisions
  • Derailments caused by excessive speed
  • Accidents that can occur if trains are routed down the incorrect track
  • Unauthorized train movements on tracks undergoing maintenance

PTC will not prevent incidents involving pedestrians or vehicles.

“PTC is one of the biggest rail industry breakthroughs, designed to keep our crews and communities safer through technology,” said Greg Richardson, Union Pacific general director Operating Systems and Practices. “While Union Pacific began its first PTC operations nearly four years ago, we have now completed our initial implementation and continue supporting other railroads in our mutual efforts to achieve interoperability and safely operate on our rail lines.”

PTC monitors trains based on a custom analysis of specific factors, including weight, location, speed and a five-mile look down the track. Locomotive engineers respond to computer screen messages, prompting them to take action, such as slowing down. If they do not respond in a timely manner, PTC automatically stops the train.

Union Pacific currently hosts 25 freight and passenger railroads, which must achieve PTC interoperability by December 2020. Sixteen of these railroads are compliant, encompassing 85% of Union Pacific's interoperable PTC train miles. While the company's PTC infrastructure is in operation, Union Pacific continues working with its remaining partner railroads, which are expected to take necessary steps to reach interoperability by mid-2020.

Union Pacific Brings 21st Century Technologies to Life with Positive Train Control Implementation

“PTC is a major safety breakthrough as 21st century technologies improve rail operations, and it’s exciting to think of how it will evolve and continue protecting our employees and the communities we serve," said Union Pacific’s Greg Richardson, general director-Operating Systems and Practices. "I’m proud of what our team has accomplished by installing and implementing PTC on our railroad."

Union Pacific’s PTC implementation is the largest in North America.  .  .  .

Union Pacific fully implements positive train control

Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) has fully implemented positive train control (PTC) across its system, and now the railroad is working on getting the safety technology to work with partnering railroads.

Union Pacific (UP) hosts 25 freight and passenger railroads, and UP must have PTC interoperability with each of these railroads by a federally mandated deadline of Dec. 31, 2020.

Interoperability occurs when a freight railroad is able to know where another company’s trains are positioned within the host railroad’s network. A train is able to send its location data to the host railroad, and the host railroad has the ability to receive that data.

So far UP has PTC interoperability with 16 railroads, constituting 85% of its interoperable PTC train miles. UP said it hopes to reach interoperability with remaining partner railroads by mid-2020, the company said on Dec. 16.
