Service on the TDLE project is expected to begin in 2030.

Sound Transit

HDR will support the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) in planning the final extension needed to complete light rail service between Seattle and Tacoma, Wash. The Tacoma Dome Link Extension (TDLE) project will advance a reliable transit alternative to severely congested roadways in the South Sound corridor.

Sound Transit’s board of directors authorized a contract with HDR’s team to provide planning, preliminary engineering, environmental, and public involvement services. HDR will support the 9.7-mile light rail transit extension with four new transit stations and a new operations and maintenance facility.

The TDLE project will continue south from Sound Transit’s previous light rail project, the Federal Way Link Extension (FWLE). Service on the TDLE project is expected to begin in 2030. The alignment will continue through South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma, and it will terminate near the Tacoma Dome transit hub, with connections to the Tacoma Link urban rail transit system, Amtrak, and Sounder commuter rail service.

“With four new LRT stations, Sound Transit and the cities in the corridor will have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform station areas into vibrant new station-communities,” HDR Project Manager Sharon Kelly said. “While Sound Transit has defined a representative alignment and general station locations, we will help them refine both in ways that benefit these cities for generations.”

Public involvement will dominate planning activities for the next three years. HDR’s team will lead stakeholder engagement, inviting the public, and property and business owners, to weigh in along with four municipalities, three transportation agencies, two counties and one tribal government. The TDLE alignment also will pass through natural resource lands, crossing streams and the Puyallup River, bringing the first urban rail transit stop to Puyallup Tribe of Indians' lands.

Among the project’s first challenges will be finding a site for a new Link operations and maintenance facility, which is needed for this project and the larger Link system to store and maintain light rail vehicles. HDR’s recent acquisition, HDR | Maintenance Design Group, brings unique qualifications to plan and design a custom, purpose-built facility that’s embraced by the community around it.

Project update

Help Sound Transit narrow alternatives and station location options for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension project

At open houses last spring, Sound Transit's project team listened to your ideas and developed alternatives based on station location suggestions. Help the TDLE team fine-tune your feedback as we:

Determine which route and station alternatives to study further for the light rail route and station locations at South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma and Tacoma Dome areas.

Evaluate potential sites between Kent and Tacoma for a new operations and maintenance facility.

Your input is crucial to the development of the 9.7-mile Tacoma Dome Link Extension light rail service, which will connect Pierce County and South King County with the regional network. Visit an in-person or online open house between now and Sept. 21.

More about TDLE

As a reminder, the voter-approved system expansion extends regional light rail from Federal Way Transit Center to the Tacoma Dome Station area, with four stations at South Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma and Tacoma Dome. Door-to-door, this project will mean 35 minutes from Tacoma Dome to SeaTac Airport; light rail will allow you to reliably fly through traffic. Light rail operations are expected to begin in 2030.

Tacoma, WA News-Tribune, 4/3/19:

Light rail from Tacoma to the airport is still 11 years away, but you can have input now

Before light rail reaches Tacoma from points north in 2030, Sound Transit wants the public to have a say on how it will impact the environment.

The regional transportation agency is holding a series of open houses this month from Federal Way to Tacoma to take input on routes and station locations.

Sound Transit news release, 9/29/20:

Online open house for Tacoma Dome Link Extension project kicks off today

Opportunity for public to weigh-in on connections to future light rail stations

Publish Date: September 29, 2020

Sound Transit is seeking public feedback on walking, rolling and cycling connections to four future light rail station locations that will be part of the Tacoma Dome Link Extension project connecting the Federal Way Transit center to the Tacoma Dome. The four future stations are located in South Federal Way and Fife and at Portland Avenue and the Tacoma Dome. Visitors to the online open house will also be able to see and comment on the latest station concepts.

An online open house will be available starting today through Oct. 28 at https://tdlink.participate.online

The regional light rail extension from Federal Way to the Tacoma Dome will be 9.7 miles of mostly elevated track. The route will traverse the Puyallup Tribe of Indians reservation and will include a new bridge crossing the Puyallup River. More information on the project and public involvement process is available at www.soundtransit.org/tdlink.

In addition to the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, Sound Transit is simultaneously working to extend regional light rail north, south and east, opening new stations every few years to form a 116-mile regional system. By 2021, Sound Transit will expand light rail to the University District, Roosevelt and Northgate. In 2022, Tacoma Link will expand to the Hilltop neighborhood. In 2023, trains will reach Mercer Island, Bellevue and the Overlake area. In 2024, light rail will run to Federal Way, Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and Downtown Redmond. Further regional light rail extensions are planned to reach West Seattle, Seattle Center, South Lake Union, Ballard, Paine Field, Everett, South Kirkland and Issaquah.

What is TDLE?

We're planning the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, a regional light rail expansion from Federal Way to Fife and Tacoma. The light rail extension will provide fast, reliable service from Pierce County to Sea-Tac International Airport and beyond.

The Tacoma Dome Link Extension (TDLE) project will add almost 10 miles of mostly elevated tracks to the regional light rail system and four new stations, near south Federal Way, Fife, East Tacoma/Portland Avenue and the Tacoma Dome.

These stations will also offer riders efficient connections to other transit options like Sounder, Tacoma Link, ST Express, King County Metro, Pierce Transit, Intercity Transit and Amtrak.

Transit service has the power to transform communities, and we need your input! This fall we're asking for your feedback on our plans for walking, rolling and cycling connections to our future stations.
