The OTOL staff has decided to make some changes regarding how we handle trip reports.  Over the most recent years, we have not received as many submissions as we used to, so we felt it would be prudent to move the feature here to the Forums rather than continuing to post new reports on our sister static website.

The website will continue to host previous trip reports submitted up to and including the year 2012.   Reports submitted from 2013 onward can be posted in this Forum.  In tandem with that change, my Fest trip reports will also now be posted here in their entirety rather than on the website, starting with our RailFests from that year.

Your trip reports are still and always wanted! Please share your experiences with us as you travel anywhere by trains, long or short trips.  REMEMBER, trip reports are welcome from everyone who has taken a trip by train and wishes to share it. I realize that many of the entries there are my reports from various group RailFests we have held over the years. But this is YOUR board and we want to hear from YOU!  I just ask a favor of you, and that is to please proofread your work for spelling and grammar errors before posting your report on the board.  Having a lot of mistakes takes away from the readers' enjoyment of your work. There are many spelling/grammar checkers out there, and also the newer versions of the various operating systems have them built in.

We hope you enjoy the changes!

Along with the above move of trip reports to the Forums, we have come to realize that a change also needed to be made to our photo posting procedures, since many who post trip reports also wish to post photos along with them.

We have available space here where we encourage you to upload photos from your hard drive.  Here are instructions you can use to add photos when you post a report to our Trip Reports forum:

  • Start your thread as you normally would, and enter the text of your report.  Make sure that you are in a screen that has an “Attach Files” feature just under the text box; otherwise this procedure will not work.
  • When ready to attach a photo, put your cursor at the spot in the report where you want the photo to appear.  Now in the “Attach Files” area, click on the “Browse” button. Locate where your photo resides on your hard drive, and click “Open”.
  • Then back in the “Attach Files” section, click on the “Attach This File” button.  This will present a new small bar underneath the posting window that includes a tiny thumbnail of your photo, the name of the photo, and on the right, a link that says, “Add to Post”. Click that, and it will put a placeholder in your text for the photo.   If you do not click "Add to Post", the photos will be placed at the bottom of the report.
  • Repeat Steps 2 & 3 for any additional photos.
  • Once you submit your report, your photos will appear in thumbnail form, which when clicked will open up a full-sized version of your picture.
  • If by chance your report has multiple pages, where a subsequent page that will contain a photo  is posted as a response to the first, to use this procedure you must use the “Reply To This Topic” button at the top right of the first report page to open the subsequent window. Using a quick editor will not enable the “Attach Files” function.

In the event you wish to use an already uploaded photo that resides on a photo sharing site or your own space, you can manually use the tag. Better yet, this function is also done for you if you have our enhanced editor turned on.  Run your cursor over the symbols and look for the word “Image”, which should be just to the right of the center of the second row of symbols. Click on that, and then in the resulting box, enter the URL that links directly to your photo.
