Rail links to airports in many cities around the world have been around for decades but getting travellers off roads and on track is a growing global trend.


 

With the debut of the UP Express line this month, Toronto joins the ranks of major world-class cities such as New York, Bangkok, London, Hong Kong, Moscow, Rome and Tokyo — all of which have had dedicated express lines between airport and city centre for years.

Toronto, Canada’s largest city, joined the ranks of those with air-rail links when the 215.5-mile Union Pearson Express train service began public operation on Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Ontario subsidizing Toronto train service with $68 million

 

What a twist of fate that Uber Chief Advisor David Plouffe was in Toronto delivering a speech about the ride-sharing company the same morning the news broke that Toronto’s $456 million UP Express train between Union Station and the Toronto Pearson airport is running 90 per cent empty.

Union-Pearson high-speed train ridership falls below 70,000
Toronto’s high-speed train between downtown and Pearson International Airport launched last June and offers a 25-minute trip to the airport with trains running every 15 minutes.

Toronto, ON Star, 3/1/16:

Torontonians on board with lowered airport train fare, poll suggests



As the prices drop, the likelihood of Torontonians using the Union Pearson Express goes up — significantly. That's the finding of a new poll by Forum Research.


Fifty-one per cent of poll respondents believe the airport train is properly priced now that ticket prices have been dropped.

CBC, 3/18/16:

Union Pearson Express ridership jumps after fare cut


A recent chop in fares is boosting ridership on Toronto's airport train, the Union-Pearson Express (UPX).

Numbers provided to CBC by Metrolinx — the regional transit agency that operates the train — show that more than 5,300 riders used UPX on Wednesday, March 9, the first day the new fares came into effect.
