INCIDENT: Crash
LOCATION OF INCIDENT: 227th & Capehart Rd.
PREPARED BY: Greg London, Chief Deputy
DETAILS:
On 3/30/2015 at 10:45 a.m., the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office and the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department responded to a crash at 227th & Capehart Rd. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) freight train heading southwest collided with the right rear side of a Sarpy County Public Works road grader that was facing west. After the crash, the train travelled about 600 yards before it came to a complete stop.
Todd Gloe, who has been employed with Sarpy County for 14 years, was grading the gravel road when the crash occurred. Gloe was transported via medical helicopter to Nebraska Medicine, where he is in stable condition.
A conductor and engineer were on board of the BNSF locomotive. Neither employee was hurt.
There are no emergency crossing arms or lights at the Capehart Rd. railroad crossing. Instead, stop signs are used to control traffic. The railroad tracks are curved at the crossing, which prevents a clear line of sight.
The crash is being investigated by the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, the La Vista Police Department and BNSF.
