Subways and Buses Ready for Storm

Subways and Staten Island Railway

The New York City Subway is operating in a Plan V preparation mode, which means that New York City Transit will store trains underground tonight to protect the subway car fleet from the elements. New York City Transit stores trains underground on express tracks, so this will impact express service at night and into the overnight hours. Staten Island Railway service is currently running on or close to schedule, but may experience periodic and or prolonged service disruptions due to snow fighting/clearing activities.

Personnel are in place clearing platforms and stairs of snow. De-icers and snow throwers have been strategically deployed to focus on outdoor areas and open cuts that are the most susceptible to high snow accumulations.

Super-powered snow throwers, jet-powered snow-blowers, and de-icing cars - retired subway cars modified with tanks and other specialized equipment to spray de-icing fluid on the third rail - were deployed starting Friday night. Select trains were also equipped with scraper shoes to keep ice off the third rails.

Bus & paratransit info omitted.

Subway and Bus Service During Storm Juno

Subways and Staten Island Railway

Personnel are in place to clear platforms and stairs of snow and ice. However, if customers must travel, they are urged to use extreme caution. As conditions worsen, NYC Transit may temporarily suspend service on outdoor, open cut sections of the system (b.png, n.png, and q.png Lines in Brooklyn; a.png and 7.png Lines in Queens; 5.png Line in the Bronx; and Staten Island Railway) to dispatch de-icers and snow blowers along these sections where heavy accumulation can occur.

A fleet of snow fighting equipment, including Super-powered snow throwers, jet-powered snow-blowers, and de-icing cars - retired subway cars modified with tanks and other specialized equipment to spray de-icing fluid on the third rail -have been strategically deployed to focus on outdoor areas and open cuts that are the most susceptible to high snow accumulations.

Select trains were also equipped with scraper shoes to keep ice off the third rails.

New York City Transit

NYC Transit will store trains underground on express tracks starting this evening to protect the subway car fleet from the elements and ensure that trains are ready for the next rush period. This means that only local service will be available and all overnight construction work is cancelled. b.png service will end early and 7.png service may be reduced.

Extra engineers and signal maintainers are being called in. LIRR is taking steps to ensure that switches – the interlocking tracks that allow rail traffic controllers to route trains from one track to another – are working throughout the storm. The railroad is activating switch heaters, lubricating the switches, and treating them with anti-freeze agents. Rail Traffic Controllers will activate the switches to keep them from freezing shut. In addition, track workers will be positioned in critical locations to be able to respond if any difficulties do crop up at switches.

Snow-fighting equipment will be positioned strategically throughout the systems to start when snow accumulation begins.

Railroad customers with smartphones can use the LIRR Train Time App for real-time train information

Suspending service ensures trains do not get stuck along the right-of-way, leaving you stranded, and making our recovery efforts extremely challenging.
Temporary suspensions allow us to shelter our fleet during the worst of the storm, and permit our employees to make maximum use of snow removal equipment to clear drifting snow and ice from our tracks, switches and train yards. They also allow us to remove any fallen trees and power lines blocking tracks. Also, employees can check signals, switches and power systems, which have to be operational before patrol trains can operate to ensure that the right-of-way is safe before resuming service.

Remember: Our first priority in any decision we make on service is your safety and comfort. Sometimes suspending service is the best way to meet that goal. A service suspension does not mean that power will be off to the third rail or overhead catenary wires on the New Haven Line. All tracks and wires will remain energized.Metro-North will provide information around the clock. Please monitor this website and email alerts, or call 511 (outside New York State, call toll free 877-690-5114), and follow local media reports for the latest service updates.

Subway and Bus Service To Resume

Subways and Staten Island Railway

Personnel are out across the system clearing platforms and stairs of snow and ice. Overnight, non-revenue service trains outfitted with scraper shoes were in operation to keep the tracks free of ice and snow in preparation for a restoration of service. Those efforts where backed up by a fleet of snow fighting equipment, including Super-powered snow throwers, jet-powered snow-blowers, and de-icing cars - retired subway cars modified with tanks and other specialized equipment to spray de-icing fluid on the third rail - that were strategically deployed to focus on outdoor areas and open cuts that are the most susceptible to high snow accumulations.
