Canadian Pacific Holiday Train, North America’s largest rolling food bank fundraiser, kicks off 16th year

Calgary, AB

The Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train program is returning to the rails for a 16th year to raise money, food, and awareness for food banks and hunger issues across Canada and the United States. Since its launch in 1999, the Holiday Train program has raised close to C$9.5 million and 3.3 million pounds of food for North American food banks.

"The Holiday Train is all about the community coming together over the holiday season and helping each other out with donations to local charities," says E. Hunter Harrison, CEO CP. "CP continues to be grateful that our train of lights and top musical talent are welcomed with open arms and that this has become a holiday tradition in our communities."

Leaving the Montreal, Quebec, area on November 26 and 27 respectively, our U.S. and Canadian trains will make the three week journey reaching over 150 communities.

The U.S. Holiday Train will travel across the U.S. Northeast and Midwest before its final show December 17 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, while the Canadian train will travel west and wrap up its journey December 18 in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

A number of musicians will be joining the Holiday Train journey this year, including the pop rock band Odds and Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo fame) on the Canadian tour and, up-and-comer country star Kira Isabella along with a cappella sensations Home Free in the U.S. Communities are encouraged to check the schedule online to see which performers will make a stop in their town.

The full CP Holiday Train schedule is now available on cpr.ca.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train set to deliver on #HealthyDonations Challenge

November 26, 2014

Calgary, AB

The Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train program is aiming to generate healthier donations this year as it makes its way across North America raising food, money, and awareness for local food banks and food shelves. The Holiday Train departs from Montreal tonight on its 16th annual coast-to-coast journey.

The online #HealthyDonations Challenge encourages patrons attending Holiday Train events to take a second glance when pulling food out of their cupboards to ensure their non-perishable donations are nutritious and heart-healthy. CP's goal is to have 20,000 people take an online pledge to underscore how important it is that everyone has access to nutritious food.

You can show your commitment at http://bit.ly/1x6u4r8.

Food banks and food shelves welcoming the Holiday Train to their community this year are also being asked to commit 10 percent or more of CP's monetary donation to healthy food initiatives or purchases.

"We're excited to once again see CP's Holiday Train travel across the country in support of community food banks," says Katharine Schmidt, executive director, Food Banks Canada. "When so many Canadians are struggling just to get enough food to eat, programs like this help to ensure so many families and individuals can access essential food."

Leaving the Montreal, Quebec, area on November 26and 27 respectively, the U.S. and Canadian trains will make stops in over 150 communities as they travel across North America.

The U.S. Holiday Train will travel across the U.S. Northeast and Midwest before its final show December 17 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, while the Canadian train will travel west and wrap up its journey December 18 in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Each Holiday Train event features performances by professional musicians that include holiday-themed songs. There's no charge to attend a Holiday Train show, but patrons are asked to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation. All money and food raised in a community stays there to help those in need locally.

A number of musicians will be joining the Holiday Train journey this year, including the pop rock band Odds, Roxanne Potvin, and Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo fame) on the Canadian tour and, in the U.S., up-and-comer country star Kira Isabella along with a cappella sensations Home Free. Communities are encouraged to check the schedule online to see which performers will make a stop in their town.

The full CP Holiday Train schedule is now available on cpr.ca.

Supporters can also join the Holiday Train on Facebook and follow the two trains on Twitter, and Instagram @CPHolidaytrain #CPHolidayTrain. Track the challenge at #HealthyDonationsChallenge. Community generosity and the CP Holiday Train raise over $1.1 million and 300,000 lbs of food on 2014 tour

January 8, 2015 Calgary, AB

Remarkable generosity, big crowds and tremendous community spirit were hallmarks of the 2014 Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train program, which saw over C$1.1 million raised and 300,000 lbs of food donated to North American food banks and food shelves.

“The crowds in 2014 were simply amazing - a true reflection of all the hard work put in by community volunteers,” said E. Hunter Harrison, CP CEO. “CP is proud to support local food banks across Canada and the U.S. and looks forward to the 2015 edition of the Holiday Train.”

Since its start in 1999, the CP Holiday Train has helped to raise more than C$10.6 million and 3.6 million pounds of food for local food banks and food shelves.

This year, the CP Holiday Train program provided a platform for dialogue around access to healthy, nutritious food. Food organizations from east to west shared their stories of volunteerism and donations of fresh, locally-farmed foods getting to the most vulnerable people in our communities. Patrons attending Holiday Train events were asked to bring healthy food options while food shelves were asked to commit 10 percent or more of CP's monetary donation to healthy food initiatives or purchases.

Crowds at Holiday Train events were entertained by a number of musicians, including the pop-rock band Odds, Roxanne Potvin, Tracey Brown, and Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo fame) on the Canadian tour and, in the U.S., country star Kira Isabella along with a cappella sensations Home Free.
