From Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers (WisARP), newsletter for January/February 2006:
A panel discussion was held in January by ProRail (a local branch of WisARP) in Madison regarding the importance of high speed intercity rail to serve Wisconsin's capital city. Basically, those attending were told that focus must shift from the federal government to state and local bodies in order to get a high speed rail line up and running.
A group is pushing for the establishment of a new station stop for Amtrak's Hiawatha Corridor trains at Lake-Cook Road, an existing METRA station stop. With all the businesses around the area (many with their own shuttle buses between station and workplace) it would be a natural for Wisconsin residents who work in this area. Also for Illinois residents who wish to visit Wisconsin, the Lake-Cook station has surplus parking facilities. It already has a ticket office which could handle Amtrak sales as well as METRA. The group proposed that Hiawatha trains stop at Lake-Cook on a 6-month trial basis. The station could serve a larger function during planned reconstruction of nearby I-294.
