King of Prussia, PA News, 10/2/10:

Transportation officials and businesses are looking to advance a proposed extension of the Norristown High Speed Line that would create a rail station at King of Prussia mall and possibly two other nearby stops.

Look here to see more.

Philadelphia, PA Inquirer, 1/23/13:

Proposed rail service to King of Prussia will be examined by SEPTA officials in three public sessions in Montgomery County next week.

Story is here.

SEPTA is considering ways to extend the Norristown High Speed Line to King of Prussia and Upper Merion Township from its current terminus in Norristown to provide train service to the region's largest suburban employment and retail center.

Well OK, but useless if SEPTA follows through on ending service over its dilapidated bridge between Bridgeport and Norristown.

This concept is new to me. Somehow I am pessimistic about SEPTA being able to build a brand new rail line when it's always a challenge to keep its existing infrastructure in service. If anything, I would have expected to see them use the Trenton Cutoff (currently freight only) as a circumferential line, and just building transfer stations where it intersects with other existing SEPTA regional rail lines. The Trenton Cutoff comes close to the King Of Prussia complex, although it might have required a slight deviation in the area off the existing right-of-way.

What would be easier—and cheaper—to do, IMHO, Kevin, would be to run a diesel push-pull from Wayne Junction to the Vanity Fair Outlet center in West Reading.

https://www.vfoutlet...our-stores.aspx

Norfolk Southern would have to be willing to share trackage, but there wouldn't be that many trains to interfere with freights; and there is enough right-of-way for passing sidings.

Most important is that there would be no need to build separate right-of-way over expensive real estate, as would be necessary at King of Prussia, to access the shopping area.

Vanity Fair backs on NS's Harrisburg—Allentown main line. A retractable platform to allow freight clearances, activated by the conductor using a transponder, would allow passengers to board and alight easily and quickly. The train could either return to Philadelphia or layover at the former Outer Station yard.

I guess SEPTA wouldn't go for the idea since it doesn't call for electric power train operation.

Sloan, Why do you propose Wayne Junction? The line through Norristown to Reading branches off the SEPTA trunk line long before Wayne Junction. Assuming your diesel train does not have dual mode engines and thus could not operate through the Center City tunnels, it would have to start at Temple University or North Broad. Temple would make most sense as it's already a start/end point in proximity to Rogers Avenue Yard.

True enough, Kevin. What SEPTA could do is follow ACES practice, diesel at one end, electric at the other. Then the train could use Center City Tunnel. Sloan

Or just buy the new dual-mode locos that NJT brought last year, which can run on Cat or diesel.

And then be sure not to park those engines in a yard that floods during a hurricane!
Alan,

Take care and take trains!

Philadelphia is inland from hurricane impact. But they shouldn't park those engines in Conshohocken, which floods from the Schuylkill River in anything more than a slight downpour.

Special website has been set up for King of Prussia Rail, and a Twitter account. Details of a meeting to take place 1/30/14 regarding this concept are here.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) welcomes your interest and participation in the King of Prussia Rail Project. Early in fall 2012, SEPTA initiated this study to evaluate an extension of the Norristown High Speed Line (NHSL) to the King of Prussia area.
