Metrorail resumes normal operations
System testing completed overnight; trains to operate normal speed

Following extensive testing and inspection during the overnight hours, Metrorail will resume normal operations as of 5 a.m., Wednesday, August 24.

Metro personnel have inspected 106 miles of track, bridges, aerial structures and tunnels -- along with parking decks and other structures -- for any signs of structural impacts following yesterday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake.

Rail service is expected to operate on a regular weekday schedule -- at normal speeds -- for the start of the Wednesday morning commute. There are currently no reported outstanding issues on the Rail system.

Bus and MetroAccess services are also expected to operate normally Wednesday.

Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles thanked customers for their patience and understanding following yesterday's earthquake. Metro slowed trains to 15 m.p.h. to allow for inspection of system's critical infrastructure.

For additional information, customers can follow Metro on Twitter @wmata.

Looks like the WMATA's done pretty good considering the circumstances. One of the reasons we have had to overbuild our transportation infrastructure around here. In 1949 the Pacific Northwest got a good wake-up call that this was a big seismic zone, sadly, that quake, a 7.1 was fatal, including a 9 year old crossing guard at a Tacoma elementary school.
