NICTD/South Shore Line news release 5/22/17:

WEEKDAY SCHEDULE CHANGE EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2017

The South Shore Line weekday train schedule will change on July 1, 2017.  The new schedule affects the following trains:

  • Eastbound Departures from Millennium
    • 4:57pm adds a stop at 57th, reduces travel time to Hegewisch and stations east by up to 2 minutes, and adds Beverly Shores as a stop
    • 5:10pm changes to 5:24pm and no longer stops at Museum Campus, 57th, Gary/Chicago Airport, or Beverly Shores, and terminates in Michigan City
    • 5:28pm changes to 5:30pm and adds stops at Museum Campus, 57th, Hammond, Gary/Chicago Airport, and all station stops to South Bend
    • 5:32pm changes to 5:45pm and adds stop at East Chicago
  • Westbound Arrivals at Millennium
    • Train 222 will depart Gary Metro Center at 7:30pm (roughly 1 hour earlier) arriving Millennium Station at 8:26pm
    • Train 22 will depart South Bend at 8:05pm ET (47 minutes earlier) making all regular stops and arriving in Chicago at 9:36pm CT

The following summary explains why we are making these adjustments.

  • NICTD believes the 5:10p train should depart Millennium Station a bit later to more effectively capture commuters who work until 5:00pm but cannot make a 5:10pm departure.  The 5:10pm train is currently only 72% full (April 2017).
  • With this change, passengers still have access to two trains departing Millennium Station after 5:00pm.  NICTD is also adding Hammond as a new stop on the 5:30pm schedule, so Hammond passengers will now be able to choose either the 5:24pm or 5:30pm departure.
  • The schedule also moves Train 217 from a 5:32pm to 5:45pm departure in order to capture more riders whose workdays end at 5:30pm.
  • Train 222 and 22 changes were in response to changes to the eastbound schedule.

NICTD/South Shore Line news release 7/13/17:

Changes to South Shore Eastbound Rush Hour Departure Times for Trains 117, 17 and 217 - Effective July 18, 2017

Changes to South Shore Eastbound Rush Hour Departure Times for Trains 117, 17 and 217 - Effective July 18, 2017

Based on the overwhelming reaction to the July 1 schedule change, the South Shore will be changing three popular trains to their pre-July 1 departure times from Millennium Station effective Tuesday, July 18.  The departure times affect Trains 117, 17 and 217 and are highlighted in bold below. Click here for PDF version.

The July 1 schedule change was intended to maximize seat utilization and provide a new service opportunity between 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm.  We were anticipating higher utilization on Train 117 and 17, what we did not anticipate was a significant ridership shift to earlier Train 115 (4:57p).  We are also experiencing an overall increase in off-peak discretionary ridership and we are seeing a number of these riders migrating to rush hour returning trains, exacerbating this overcrowding condition.

The schedule change clearly caused overcrowding and inconvenienced many of our riders.  That was not our intention and for that we apologize.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Extra Train on July 13, 14 and 17

Until July 18 we plan to run an extra eastbound train departing Millennium at 5:10p, stopping at Van Buren at 5:13p, running non-stop to Hegewisch and making all local stops terminating in Michigan City.  This train should help alleviate overcrowding on Train’s 115 and 117

Please review the above schedule for the scheduled arrival times for your station. All other July 1 changes remain unchanged.

The Times, Munster, IN 7/15/17:

South Shore afternoon rush hour returning to pre-July 1 schedule

The South Shore Line will switch three popular afternoon rush-hour trains back to their pre-July 1 schedule after a new schedule implemented on that day proved impractical.

Starting Tuesday, trains 117, 17 and 217 will depart Millennium Station at 5:10, 5:28 and 5:32 p.m., respectively. Each will depart Van Buren Street three minutes later.

The July 1 schedule change had those three trains leaving Millennium at 5:24, 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. Pushing the trains to those later departure times had been intended to maximize ridership and to give city workers who end their day at 5 p.m. more time to get to the train.

But riders didn't shift in ways the railroad expected.
