Metrolink news release, 7/13/17:

Thursday July 13, 2017

July is National Ice Cream Month.

LOS ANGELES – Celebrating National Ice Cream Month in the sweltering month of July, the Metrolink CEO and the owner of Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop at Los Angeles Union Station today helped train commuters beat the heat by serving them free ice cream samples.

Woody, the Ben & Jerry’s black and white cow mascot, also brought smiles to faces of Metrolink riders who were surprised by the unprecedented treat as they boarded afternoon trains for home at Union Station.

“What better way to beat the heat than with the best ice cream and the best travel bargain in town,” said Metrolink CEO Art Leahy who noted that on Saturdays and Sundays, Metrolink offers $10 unlimited rides to the Southland’s premier beaches in Oceanside and San Clemente, among many other family and tourist destinations.

Leahy also thanked David Bernstein, owner of the Ben & Jerry’s Union Station franchise, located near the Amtrak ticketing counter, who personally served Metrolink riders today.

“National Ice Cream month is not only a great time to celebrate one of America’s favorite summertime pleasures but a good way to cool off when the temperatures rise!” said Bernstein.

“It’s fun to give free scoops to our fans that travel through LA Union Station on Metrolink, and hopefully we've given them smiles for miles on their afternoon commute.”

Metrolink, which provides passenger train service to six Southern California counties, is one of the few public transit operators in the region that permits eating on its trains. There are tables and bathrooms and water dispensers. And, for those beating the summer heat, the bicycle cars also can safely accommodate surfboards. Families and others are welcome to bring their beach gear including chairs, umbrellas and coolers.
