NJ Transit cancels trains due to crew shortage

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Some New Jersey Transit trains have been canceled this week during the summerlong repair work at Penn Station in New York because engineers are exercising contract rights that allow them to take two days to report for work when schedule changes are made.

Several trains were canceled Monday afternoon on the North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor line. An early morning North Jersey Coast Line train was canceled Tuesday, NJ Transit said.

NJ Transit cancels routes thanks to ‘crew shortage’ loophole

As if the trains weren’t bad enough!

New Jersey Transit riders on Monday and Tuesday not only experienced delays, but some service was canceled altogether — thanks to a longstanding loophole that gives engineers and crew members the right to take two days off from work when changing schedules.

Item is here.  Despite their very poorly worded headline, NO routes were cancelled. Trains were.  All NJT routes still exist.

Metro Magazine, 7/20/17:

NJ Transit weighing disciplinary actions for no-show train engineers

NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Transit is weighing whether it can pursue disciplinary action against train engineers who no-showed, creating a manpower shortage that forced dozens of cancellations this week amid summer-long track work at New York's Penn Station, according to U.S. News and World Report.

NJ Transit Executive Director Steve Santoro said at a joint Assembly-Senate oversight committee meeting that there were 40 total cancellations Sunday and Monday and that he will meet later this week with union leaders, adding that if discipline is appropriate it will occur consistent with the agency’s contract with the union.
