Murphy promises short-term relief for crowded NJ Transit commuter trains

Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday announced a plan to put 40 more cars back on NJ Transit rails to answer complaints about squeezing on overcrowded trains.

The Democratic governor said during a news conference at the Trenton train station that the transportation agency will put 20 rail cars back in service that had been waiting to have Positive Train Control equipment installed. NJ Transit also plans to lease 20 other rail cars from a Maryland commuter agency, Murphy said.

"It will at least help alleviate the immediate concerns of commuters," he said.

State Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said that NJ Transit was short by 37 cars to operate its full daily rail schedule.

There is a kind of irony here in that way back in the 1970's when the Maryland MTA (now under the MARC brand)  ran commuter service between Baltimore and Washington, they borrowed Arrow cars from NJ Dept. of Transportation (before the NJ TRANSIT days) ... and now MARC has to bail out NJT with extra cars.

More NJ Transit riders may get a seat on a train, thanks to Gov. Murphy

There will be more cars on NJ Transit trains to ease overcrowding on busy train lines, Gov. Phil Murphy promised at an NJ Transit meeting Wednesday.

Twenty rail cars were put back into service that had been sidelined for inspection. NJ Transit is also leasing 20 rail cars from the Maryland Transit Administration, Corbett said.

New Jersey Herald, 5/1/18:

Overcrowded New Jersey Transit gets rail cars from Maryland

Ten rail cars from the Maryland Transit Administration's MARC commuter rail service are in New Jersey and ready to be used by NJ Transit in an effort to ease overcrowding.

Story here.

On Saturday in Philadelphia I saw a MARC consist sitting on one of the tracks within 30th Street Station.  This was probably some or all of the 10 cars headed for NJ; why it was sitting in that station unknown.
