A week ago I took my first spin on a SEPTA Regional Rail train since the piecemeal implementation of aspects of Key Card (including putting turnstiles in major stations). I don't have a Key Card nor may I ever I get one, mostly because I don't live in Philly and don't ride SEPTA often enough.  I still had to buy a paper ticket at 30th Street Station.  At the turnstile I had to show my paper ticket to someone, who then told me to proceed through the turnstile to the platform.  Aboard the train, just like old times, the crew still came through the train and checked every ticket, using some for outer zones as seat checks, and later collecting all of them well before the trip was completed in Trenton.   So the only benefit from having the fare inspectors at the turnstiles is that it keeps non-travelers (such as vagrants) out of the platform area.  Mine was a midday train; I don't know if it's any different during rush hours.

Philly.com, 5/14/19:

SEPTA to complete new and improved website for Key cards

SEPTA has finished an upgrade to its much-maligned website for the Key fare card, the transit agency reported Tuesday.

The new site, which has been available in beta testing mode since March, was expected to fully replace the original site on Wednesday, SEPTA said. Website improvements cost $2.88 million, and the work also will eventually allow the Key website to be accessed through SEPTA’s mobile app.

Users have criticized SEPTA Key’s website, www.septakey.org, as being confusing and difficult to navigate. The agency acknowledged in 2017 that the site was a bust and promised an improvement.

Is Your Key Card About to Expire?

Key Cards are valid for three years as noted by the expiration date on the front of the Card. Key Cards for some of our Early Adopters will begin expiring starting July 2019 so please take a moment and check your Card.

It's easy to replace an expiring Key Card and transfer your Fare Product or Travel Wallet funds to a new Key Card as long as your Card is registered.

Follow these steps to learn how to get a new card:

1. Register Your Current Key Card: Go online to BETA.SEPTAKey.org. Registering your Card protects your SEPTA fare in the event it is ever lost or stolen.

2. You have 2 options for Getting a NEW KEY Card:

  • Use the remaining funds on your card and then purchase a new one at any SEPTA station Fare Kiosk, SEPTA Sales location, or External Retail Network location (Register your new Card online within 30 days and the $4.95 Card purchase fee will be added to your Travel Wallet).
  • OR transfer your current balance to a new card at one of our SEPTA Sales locations.
  • Register your new card online within 30 days and the $4.95 card purchase fee will be added to your Travel Wallet

Plan Philly, 7/30/19

SEPTA Regional Rail paper Trailpasses will disappear starting in August

The final swipes have come for the 40,000 SEPTA Key card that will go dead on July 31.

If you were one of the 39,386 early adopters who picked up a newborn card three years ago and haven’t already spent or moved your balance, this is the time to call the SEPTA Key magicians at Conduent (855-567-3782). Ask to transfer your balance over to a fresh card before the credit vanishes.  (Emphasis added)

But old Key cards aren’t the only SEPTA passes passing into obsolescence.

Now that weekly and monthly passses work on the Key card for all four Regional Rail zones, SEPTA is phasing out its paper monthly and weekly trailpasses. SEPTA will convert all TrailPasses to Key card purchases over the next few months.

Continue here.
