Newark, NJ Star-Ledger, 4/14/15:

NJ Transit fares could be hiked as much as 9 percent, state report says

Commuters could be hit with an NJ Transit fare increase that might reach 9 percent in fiscal year 2016, based on budget documents for the coming year.

NJ Transit's budget documents said revenue from fares would increase by 8.8 percent, from the $928.6 million earned in fiscal year 2015 to $1.01 billion in 2016, according to an Office of Legislative Services' review of NJ Transit's financials.

Progressive Railroading, 4/21/15:

NJ Transit proposes 9 percent fare hike

In light of a $60 million budget deficit for the 2016 fiscal year, New Jersey Transit officials proposed increasing fares an average of 9 percent, the agency announced in a press release yesterday.

More here

In addition to the fare increase, two scheduled train stops — one on the Pasack Valley Line and one on the Montclair-Boonton Line — would be cut.

Very POOR choice of words by whoever wrote this up for the press.  I was looking to see what stations are being eliminated, but if you read NJT's own synopsis (linked above in middle of first quoted sentence), it says that entire trains are being eliminated, the last ones of the night on those lines. The stations aren't going anywhere.

Of note in the bus route reductions is the 419 line, which is basically a rubber tired version of the RiverLINE.  Not much lost by eliminating the segment they are planning to cut, or even the entire line if need be since it is so closely duplicated.  They might want to retain the bus line though during the late night curfew hours when the RiverLINE is replaced by freight trains.

NJ Transit fare increase: An unfair approach to transportation funding

To help close an $80 million budget gap, NJ Transit has proposed to increase its fares an average of 9 percent, effective Oct. 1. This would be the first fare increase in five years; the last fare increase averaged 22 percent. As part of the proposal, some bus and train service would also be reduced. Meanwhile, the state's gas taxes, already among the lowest in the nation, have not been raised since 1988.

NJ Transit should show commuters it's not taking them for a ride

I represent thousands of Monmouth County commuters who depend on mass transit to get to work five days a week. By proposing a hefty fare hike, NJ Transit is taking them for a ride.

Asbury Park (NJ) Press, 6/18:

NJ Transit mum on Chris Christie loyalist work

For rail line commuters to New York Penn Station from Aberdeen-Matawan, the NJ Transit fare hike will increase monthly payments $35, to $421. But the agency hired former Christie aide Michael Drewniak anyway despite pleading a budget shortfall.

TRENTON – NJ Transit, which wants to raise fares 9 percent, won’t say what Gov. Chris Christie’s former press secretary has been working on since being added to the payroll with a six-figure salary three months ago.

The railroad and bus agency hired Michael Drewniak as chief of policy and strategic planning at a salary of $147,700. Drewniak, who came with no experience in transportation planning, made $134,000 when he worked for Christie.

SNIP

The fare increase along with service cuts will be voted on by the NJ Transit board July 15. Service cuts would take effect on Sept. 30 and fares would increase on Oct. 1.

Journal-News, White Plains, NY, 7/12/15:

Fate of late night Rockland train to be decided this week

Rockland residents will likely find out this week if they'll still be able to take a late night Pascack Valley Line train on most days to get home from New York City.

On Wednesday, the New Jersey Transit board is expected to decide whether to eliminate the 12:45 a.m. train out of Hoboken, N.J. (1601), which runs Monday through Friday.
