From somewhere in New Hampsire Union-Leader, 2/1/09:

David Fink: A different commuter rail plan for NH

My company, Pan Am Railways, has recently re-entered negotiations with New Hampshire Department of Transportation Commissioner George Campbell on a plan to introduce comprehensive, cost-effective commuter rail service in New Hampshire.

From Union-Leader, 1/16/09:

Commuter rail may get back on track

NASHUA – A state official says there's a "very good chance" funds for a commuter rail line from Boston to Nashua and Manchester can be gleaned from the economic stimulus bill introduced yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives.

When you read the "Bedford" article, yet once again Pan Am Rail is obstructing the introduction of this passenger service. the article also describes how Pan Am opposed the Downeaster Portland-Boston service. What is intriquing is the recitation that the (US) Supreme Court ruled that the State could not take the rail line over by eminent domain over the objection of the freight rail operator. This severely limits the options of the State to ever run passenger traffic where Pan Am opposes it, unless they contract with Amtrak, which seems to have a special exclusion to the prohibition. Yet agin, lawyers stand in the way of what society both wants and needs. Shameful.
