Three sites for new Buffalo train station all pose challenges

The task of selecting the location for a new Buffalo train station will be handed to a blue ribbon panel that will spend a million dollars studying the question over the next six months.

Higgins Wants to See New Amtrak Station at Buffalo Central Terminal

Congressman Brian Higgins spoke out about Buffalo’s Amtrak station on Wednesday, saying it is inadequate in terms of size and aesthetics.

“It is probably the worst Amtrak station in all of New York State and arguably the entire country," said Rep. Higgins (D-26th Congressional District).

Another Voice: New Amtrak station should be built at Canalside

In 1996, while principal architect at Hamilton Houston Lownie, I directed and authored the “Buffalo Central Terminal Engineering Feasibility Study,” which compared the renovation cost of the deteriorating building to site preparation and construction costs of a conventional replacement of similar area. When renovation proved to be less, the Common Council moved to secure the building from its negligent owner.

The unofficial vote went to Amtrak returning to Broadway-Fillmore's Central Terminal during a packed and occasionally raucous public meeting Tuesday night at the Buffalo Science Museum.

Prospects dim for Canalside train station site

The prospects of Canalside as the site of Buffalo's new train station have considerably dimmed.

That possibility was just one of several major developments Thursday in the increasingly intense public debate over where Buffalo's new train station should go.

NFTA says moving bus terminal to train station would come with high cost

A new facility for intercity trains and buses is emerging from the drawing board of the committee determining how best to replace Amtrak’s Exchange Street Station.

Story

Intermodalism certainly makes sense.  But a combined bus/train station obviously needs to be near train tracks, which eliminates the current downtown transportation center from contention.   However just as important, if the old Central Terminal site returns to transportation uses, then NFTA will need to provide a convenient shuttle service between there and downtown -- which certainly could be accomplished by keeping the downtown bus terminal.  I think that intercity buses should all serve the rail station to allow for easy connections or Thruway possibilities.

Editorial in Buffalo, NY News. 4/13/17:

The new Amtrak station belongs downtown

The problem with choosing between downtown Buffalo and the Central Terminal as the location for a new train station is that each site holds advantages that may be sacrificed if the other is selected. Whatever the benefits of any decision, something valuable could be lost.

Preservationist backs Washington Street for new Amtrak station

With a state-appointed committee due to decide Thursday where a new city passenger train station should be located, a highly visible preservationist is arguing the new station should be in downtown Buffalo on Washington Street just south of Exchange Street.

Here is another story.
