First of all I want to publicly thank Alan for compiling and posting all of the information regarding the impacts of Hurricane Sandy to the various transit operators. My home was in Ground Zero of the affected area, and was out of power for almost 6 days, and then for another day after the 1-2 punch of the Nor'Easter (known only to the Weather Channel as Athenia). I set up a lot of topics but then was helpless to keep them up to date when it mattered the most.

First the good news.... Miami Metrorail/Metromover, Norfolk TIDE light rail, Washington Metro, VRE, MARC, Baltimore Metro & LRT, PATCO, SEPTA, Shore Line East, and MBTA all appear to be experiencing normal operations.

NJ TRANSIT (with the exception of the Atlantic City Line and RiverLINE), was hit the worst and will take a while to fully recover. Today the third of the 3 routes of the Hudson-Bergen LRT resumed, but the West Side Avenue-Tonnelle Avenue service continues at very infrequent intervals. Some commuter rail lines supposedly restored are operating rush hour service only.

PATH is only running one of its 4 lines, between Journal Square and 33rd Street, and then only between 5 AM and 10 PM.

Metro North appears to be all back, except for the New Canaan Line and the NJT-operated Pascack Valley Line. As mentioned above, only rush hour service operates on the Port Jervis Line via the NJT Main Line. There will be some weekend service starting tomorrow.

Long Island Railroad is hard hit, running only modified service on all but one of its lines. Still suspended is the Long Beach Branch.

New York City Transit continues to restore its routes, as tunnels are pumped out and brought back into service. The A and S lines in the Rockaways will be out for quite some time. The 1 line in lower Manhattan remains out of service pending repairs to South Ferry Terminal.

If I left anything major out of this synopsis, or anything is not correct as of Friday 5 PM, please let me know.

OK, it's Thursday 11/15, and here is a general look at what has changed since Friday 11/9:

NJ TRANSIT light rail service is now running normally on the RiverLINE and HBLRT. Newark LRT is still running a limited schedule on the older "subway" branch to Bloomfield, and even more limited on the branch to Broad Street Station.

NJ TRANSIT commuter rail is now restored on a limited basis on all lines, except the Gladstone Branch and North Jersey Coast Line which remain totally out of service. Morristown (M&E) service is Midtown Direct (New York) only, with no service to Hoboken. Montclair-Boonton Line is back with service to both New York and Hoboken. Limited service is now restored to High Bridge and the Bergen County & Pascack Valley Lines but they skip Secaucus. Event service on the Meadowlands Line is not yet operating.

Metro North's New Canaan Branch is back in service.

Long Island Railroad restored the Long Beach Branch, but only as a limited hours diesel shuttle connecting with other trains at Lynbrook. All lines continue running on a limited basis.

New York City Transit claims that 98% of its service is running, however the hard hit Wall Street area has very little subway service, with the R, 1, and J/Z lines cut back. And without power, restoration of intra-Rockaways service to replace the A S service has proven problematic.

PATH earlier this week extended its 33rd Street-Journal Square service to Harrison and Newark; service continues to run on a single line as Hoboken, Exchange Place, and WTC stations remain out of service.
