Nicor files complaint against CN stemming from Plainfield oil spill
Natural gas company claims CN is blocking completion of pipeline project
PLAINFIELD – A disagreement was bound to happen.
Nicor Gas and CN are now in a legal dispute in Cook County Court regarding the cause, and fallout, from a June 30 train derailment in Plainfield that caused tankers to lose more than 30,000 gallons of crude oil near the DuPage River.
Though no one would say definitively at the time, CN’s followup investigation into the derailment – submitted to the Federal Railway Administration – blame’s Nicor and its contractor, who were working on reconstruction of a pipeline, for weakening the soil near and underneath the railroad and names it as the cause of the derailment.

“It is imperative that Nicor Gas be allowed to install the replacement pipe or temporarily reconnect and safety test the existing pipeline by Oct. 15 in order to meet the natural gas needs of more than 250,000 customers who rely on natural gas during the winter heating season,” Nicor said.
