Article in today's Seattle Times about the impending rerouting of passenger trains on the Point Defiance bypass.  I had hoped to take the train to Centralia on Day 1 (a week from tomorrow) but I have a commitment I can't get out of.  So I will probably now wait until spring to experience the new trackage and gain some rare mileage.

The Point Defiance Bypass goes into effect tomorrow--after how many years of trials and tribulations, not to mention false starts??  All is forgiven.  With the two new Cascade trains and the recently launched extra Sounders, train watching at intermediate stations will be so much fun!  I personally like the new Tukwila station for this endeavor.  From WSDOT.

At 9:54pm Train 508, according to the scanner and the Amtrak app, departed the Tacoma Amtrak Station for the last time. 501 will be the first Amtrak train into Freighthouse Square in the morning. I'll be taking 501 to Portland on Friday. Took my last trip on the old route back on Black Friday.

Testing to commence for PTC implementation on Sound Transit owned trackage between Lakewood and DuPont.  In anticipation of the return of Amtrak Cascades to the Bypass route sometime by the end of this year, one hopes.  Plans (part of the ST3 package approved by voters) are also afoot for the extension of Sounder commuter rail to Tillicum and DuPont.....but not until 2035.  Ouch.  There must be other stretches of track on the Amtrak system NOT owned by freight railroads or Amtrak itself, but I can't think of where.

From Sound Transit.

The portion between Reservation Junction and Freighthouse Square is owned by the City of Tacoma.
