Work begins on the Purple Line project

Thank you for your interest in the Purple Line. After years of planning and design, the project has begun construction. This work includes the removal of trees and underbrush, establishing fences and environmental protection along the work zone. Utility investigations will also be taking place at many locations along the corridor.

Work has begun on the site of the Bethesda Metro South Entrance located on Elm Street in Bethesda. This station will eventually provide a connection to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). This operation will continue for several years.

The Georgetown Branch Interim Trail is closed until the new trail opens in 2021. The corridor is an active construction zone, and security of the site will be enforced. It is important that people refrain from entering the site for their safety.

Arliss Street in Silver Spring between Flower Avenue and Walden Road is scheduled to be closed through 2020 to allow the construction of the east side of the Plymouth Tunnel. This site, adjacent to the Giant Food Store, will have a fenced construction yard. Access to the Arliss Knolls Townhouses will be maintained.

Plymouth Street will also be temporarily closed during the construction of the west side of the tunnel and Manchester Station. However, access for local traffic will be maintained.

General preconstruction work, including tree removal and site prep, has started along the western side of Veterans Parkway in Riverdale.

As work continues, we will strive to keep you informed of the progress of this exciting project. For information on construction activities, schedules and other updates, please visit www.purplelinemd.com/construction. For immediate construction concerns, please email us at outreach@pltcllc.com or call the construction hotline at 240-424-5325.

All activities are subject to change due to traffic, weather or emergency situations.

WTOP radio 3/22/19:

Maryland and Purple Line leaders still arguing over cost

Construction of the Purple Line is now 10 percent complete, according to project leaders who provided an update Thursday before the Montgomery County Council’s transportation committee.

“The design of the project is largely complete,” said Fred Craig, CEO of Purple Line Transit Partners, a group of companies that is building the line. “You’ll see that there is now construction going on in a lot of different places. Then, of course, there’s a lot of reconstruction of bridges and those types of things that we either pass over or pass under.”

Project leaders would not specify Thursday how much money the delays would ultimately add to the light-rail line’s cost, but there have been reports that the figure could be well over $200 million.

“I don’t know exactly how much those costs are at this point,” said Charles Lattuca who represents the Maryland Transit Administration.

Maryland transportation officials will need to reach an agreement on that with Purple Line Transit Partners, which has a public-private partnership with the state.
