I have been going to Boston for the past several years over this weekend, and have never run into such problems. There must be something going on this year on that weekend, as many of the downtown hotels have been found to be either sold out or the only rooms left will cost more than you are willing to spend.

Please expand your searches to the suburban areas. You can find a list of hotels near train stations on this page. And keep in mind that all of our activities will be on rail lines to the south of the city (with the exception of Saturday late afternoon and evening when we ride some transit lines), so you may prefer to stay in hotels that are south of downtown Boston, or else west of the city along the Worcester Line. But remember that our Saturday start for the Greenbush Line is at 8:15 AM, so you need to be sure you can get to South Station before then.

Before we know it, the suburban hotels will also either sell out, or have rooms available that will set you back over $300 a night. Already some of our participants have run into problems in finding rooms available or finding affordable accommodations.

I STRONGLY SUGGEST BOOKING HOTELS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! And remember, if hotel costs are too high for you to be able to afford a third night or you can't find anything for Saturday night, there will be some people returning to points south on Amtrak Regional #169 on Saturday evening. If you do plan to do this, you can store your luggage at South Station on Saturday morning and pick it up before departure of 169.

You might also consider my separate hotel listings for Providence, RI and Worcester, MA, both of which are connected to Boston with MBTA commuter (MBCR) trains (as well as Amtrak, although the latter only has the Lake Shore Limited stub train).
