New Orleans, LA Times-Picayune, 1/24/13:

...the Regional Transit Authority plans to continue the Loyola Avenue tracks from Canal Street, all the way down Rampart Street to Elysian Fields by 2013. He and others are already “scrambling around Washington” to find money to extend the line along St. Claude Avenue to Poland Avenue, he said.

This is the story.

Rampart streetcar work set for January

RTA officials say construction is set to start next month on the line running down North Rampart and St. Claude between Canal Street and Elysian Fields. Streetcars will share roadway lanes with other traffic, bringing streetcars right past businesses like Dreamy Weenies.

Could this be bringing back the streetcar Named desire?

Could this be bringing back the streetcar Named desire?

Mercifully, no.   I can't describe this in directions because New Orleans uses terms such as Upriver and Downriver instead of north, south, east, and west.  But let's just say that Desire Street is off this map, well to the right of the limits of the map.  It will be the Streetcar Named Rampart or the Streetcar Named French Quarter.

Rampart streetcar in the near future

NEW ORLEANS(WGNO)– Construction on the Rampart streetcar is underway and expected to wrap up this August. The $42 million project began in January and is ongoing through the summer. However, new technology will allow them to finish the remainder of the project in 30 days.

Could North Rampart-St. Claude streetcar cut into major bus route?

Could new streetcars rumbling along St. Claude Avenue and North Rampart Street cut short a major bus artery connecting downriver neighborhoods to New Orleans' downtown?

"We're very nervous that that could happen," said Alex Posorske, executive director of the advocacy group Ride New Orleans.

Remainder of article along with a slide show of construction is here:

Well that is usually what does happen, as common sense dictates eliminating duplicative bus routes when a new rail line opens. The key to making the streetcar an attractive facility to transfer to & from is to keep stops several blocks apart, so that the streetcars are not stopping at every single corner like the Canal Streetcar does now. Signal pre-emption would help too; they should be able to install it on a brand new line.
