A streetcar should work well in this city with its strong manufacturing base and the presence of several colleges. I am glad to see the concept did not fade permanently when first raised more than eight years ago.

The City of Winston-Salem will hold a workshop Thursday to give an update on a proposed urban circulator project, such as a streetcar or enhanced-bus service, that would connect downtown and surrounding neighborhoods to each other and the region.

P. S.: Don't know what the outcome of the meeting, held in late January 2013, was.

Would streetcar enhance desired growth downtown?
Proponents of a downtown streetcar say it could whisk passengers from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to the research park downtown in only 13 minutes, but to do that it first has to be built.

Following Charlotte's lead in North Carolina, and perhaps pacing similar efforts in Raleigh-Durham, the Winston-Salem City Council's Public Works Committee has approved a streetcar proposal.

Winston-Salem had been dithering over a streetcar plan for about ten years. It's nice to see this project gain acceptance among political leaders.. Some PCCs or Gomaco units would kick start operations quickly and economically, IMHO.

New streetcar proposal comes to city council
A new proposal for a downtown streetcar line came to the Winston-Salem City Council on Monday, although for now the city is being asked only to provide $50,000 toward a study of the idea.
Let's hope this is the end of "study-itis," and the beginning of real progress. Sloan

Winston-Salem, NC Journal, 4/21/18:
Questions abound on Winston-Salem streetcar proposal; study may provide the answers
Whether a streetcar can safely make its way through residential streets is but one question that officials will have to determine before a streetcar plies a potential route between Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.

Derailed: Streetcar too expensive, officials say
No streetcars will be running in between Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.
At least not any time soon. Probably not in your lifetime, one Winston-Salem official said this week.
